Hours/work schedule: Casual Position - this position will be employed on an on-call basis. There is no guarantee of hours. Scheduled shifts would fall between Monday and Friday and between 7:30 am and 5:30 pm (with possibility of special events outside of these dates and times).

Fernwood Neighbourhood House (FNH) is a vibrant multi-service organization working on the unceded ləkʔəŋən (Lekwungen) lands in Victoria BC. We are looking for an on-call Kitchen Support Worker at the Fernwood Community Centre.
Food is at the centre of our organization because it is the original community organizing Community Centre houses three full-time Childcare programs a Before- and After- School Care program and Community & Family programs such as our Community Dinner Family Resource groups and Seniors programming. The Centre is also a food distribution hub for rescued and donated food for the Coalition of Neighbourhood Houses which is incorporated into our programming.
The ideal candidate believes in our mission to support Fernwood. You have excellent coordination communication and problem solving skills; are extremely organized; a great team player and have experience planning and cooking meals for a high volume of clients from infants to seniors and everyone in between.
Job Summary
The role of the Kitchen Support Worker is to support the delivery of all of Fernwood NHs program meals and snacks in a coordinated and efficient manner. Food needs for programming vary day to day but can include (though are not limited to) preparing the following: snacks for 50 adults snacks for 150 children lunch for 30 adults lunch for 45 children dinner for 70 individuals (children and adults) and coffee and tea addition this role handles food inventory monitoring temperature and equipment logs and cleaning. The Kitchen Support Worker is directed and supported by the Community Centre Cook.
General Responsibilities
Following a pre-determined menu cook and prepare healthy age appropriate snacks and meals.
Pivot existing menus based on inventory dietary restrictions and/or changes in program size.
Receive pick-up and sort donated foods.
Support the Cook with menu planning based on donated items.
Place food orders with suppliers or go grocery shopping based on program needs.
Meet budget and wastage targets
Maintain inventory and ensure minimal food waste
Keep a log of the fridge and dishwasher temperatures
Maintain proper food rotation
Maintain kitchen cleanliness
Support prep and cleaning tasks with direction from the Cook.
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications/Requirements
Food Safe Certified
1 year experience in a high volume cooking position (preferably in the community sector)
Experience preparing food for clients with specific dietary needs including small children
Valid Class 5 BC drivers license and clean drivers abstract
Excellent communication skills and ability to work well in a team
Ability to problem-solve and prioritize tasks with minimal supervision
The successful candidate will need to a undergo a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check upon hiring.
Working Conditions / Equipment Used
Reporting to the Community Centre Cook (and ultimately the Director of Community Programs)
Ability to lift and move boxes of produce and frozen foods (up to 40lbs)
Experience using a commercial dishwasher standard ovens stove tops and cold storage
Wage / Hours of Work
Starting wage of $20.15/hr

Unionized Position
Fernwood Neighbourhood House is a unionized workplace and this position is part of the BC General Employees Union (BCGEU). We are currently negotiating our first collective agreement. The compensation package for this role reflects current wages and benefits with adjustments anticipated once the collective agreement is finalized.
Please note that following the ratification of the collective agreement union dues will be deducted from employees pay in accordance with the terms outlined in the collective agreement and BCGEU policies.
