Senior Mechanical Engineer with strong knowledge of job area and broad knowledge of project management. Manages complex projects or processes with general oversight. Communicates within and outside of own function to gain cooperation on operational processes practices and procedures. Makes moderate to substantial improvements to systems and processes. Contributes to achievement of departmental goals and operating plans with direct impact on the departmental results.
Mechanical Engineers at in the L3Harris Space & Sensors Division are responsible for a wide range of assignments including design analysis and test of opto-mechanical and electro-optical systems. These systems have demanding functional and performance requirements and must operate in extremely challenging environments. Mechanical Engineers will follow the product from conceptualization through hardware integration and testing and will interface with Designers Systems Engineers as well as other discipline engineers Program Managers and customer counterparts. Duties may include CAD design detailed finite element analysis vendor and integration support as well as hardware characterization testing.
The selected individual will be responsible for various analyses on multiple prototype development teams. The individual must demonstrate the ability to apply engineering principles and fundamental analysis techniques to characterize and evaluate hardware performance as it relates to the development of opto-mechanical and electro-optical hardware systems.
Essential Functions:
- Provide technical leadership and oversightto multiple cross-disciplinary Engineering design teams. Teams willbe tasked with developing various types of ruggedized opto-mechanical and electro-optical systems and technologies.
- Oversee or directly perform theconceptualization and development of working designs computer modelslayouts and drawings using MCAD/MCAE tools.
- Develop review and approve engineeringdocumentation including product specifications drawings assembly procedures and test plans/procedures. A comprehensive understandingof GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and DFMA is required. Experience with tolerance stack methodology is preferred.
- Perform mechanical analyses of componentsand subsystems employing both classical and Finite Element methods. Analyses may be quasi-static kinematicand/or dynamic in nature and are intended to characterize or verify thestructural integrity stability and performance of the hardware.
- Prepare and review schedulesspecifications process standards and other contract documentation to plan the successful execution of multi-year multi-million dollardevelopment efforts.
- Participate (as a presenter and/orreviewer) in internal and customer design reviews intended to demonstrate design conformance to all derived requirements and customer specifications.
- Assist the Purchasing Dept. withprocurement of product hardware including vendor certification vendoroversight product source inspection and nonconformance disposition as required.
- Support the assembly integration and testof the product or prototype hardware. A working understanding ofoptical systems and hardware integration is a plus. Familiarity with military testing to MIL-STD-810 and MIL-STD-461 is desired.
- Ensure quality through adherence to theQuality Systems Manual applicable Standard Work Instructions and other standards invoked internally or contractually.
- Adhere to budget and schedule commitments.
- Lead technical proposal efforts as part ofa program capture team: Conceptualize suitable architecture and prepare input text and figures for the proposal technical volume. Estimatethe labor required to execute on proposed projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
- 5% Travel expectation (minimal)
- Must be able to obtain security clearance as needed. Not required upon entry.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree and minimum 6 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior related lieu of a degree minimum of 10 years of prior related experience.
- 6 years of experience in relevant prototype development and production required experience w/hardware development for aerospace applications is strongly preferred 4 years with a Masters degree
- 2 years experience with optics lens design and common opto-mechanical alignment techniques is required. Experience with ultra high vacuum (UHV) processing and cryogenic compressor design/production methods is desirable (not mandatory).
- 4 years experience with CAD tools Solidworks/Solid Edge is required.
- 4 years experience with GD&T and drawing standards per ASME (Y14.5) is required.
- 2 years experienc with structural structural dynamics or thermal analyses is required. Familiarity with FEA tools particularly FEMAP/NX Nastran and/or ANSYS are preferred.
- 2 years experience with computer design tools (Teamcenter MathCAD Matlab) is preferred.
- Meets eligibility requirements to obtain security clearance
