Job Summary

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Works in accordance with all applicable federal state and local building and electrical codes. Plans layout installs and repairs wiring electrical fixtures apparatus and direct digital control (DDC) equipment and troubleshoots faults. Responds to emergency calls as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Plans new or modified installations and repairs to minimize waste of materials provide access for future maintenance and avoid unsightly hazardous and unreliable wiring consistent with specifications and local electrical codes.

Prepares sketches showing the location of wiring and equipment or follows diagrams or blueprints ensuring that concealed wiring is installed or replaced in compliance with applicable codes and regulations before completion of future walls ceilings and flooring. Estimates costs associated with installation and repairs.

Coordinates work with other tradesmen and provides guidance to helpers and unskilled or semi-skilled laborers.

Connects wiring to lighting fixtures power equipment HVAC units appliances and other items. Uses proper wiring pipe bending and splicing techniques to install conduit wire mold Greenfield conduits wire nuts crimps and other associated items.

Installs or replaces control and distribution apparatus such as switches relays and circuit-breaker panels.

Troubleshoots and locates defects in electrical systems fire systems DDC central clock and bell systems machinery and equipment. Tests continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components. Repairs faulty equipment or systems.

Conducts maintenance inspections and observes functioning of installed equipment or system to detect hazards and need for adjustments relocation or replacement.

Devises selects sets up and operates electronic instrumentation and related testing equipment to check solid-state and electromechanical equipment used for the operational and environmental operation of building equipment. Including but not limited to public address systems central clock and bell systems parking lot lights/related equipment on energy management systems generator systems DDC systems and fire monitoring systems.

Provides general custodial support when necessary.

Reads understands and complies with appropriate MSDS confined space and lockout/tagout information

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Associates degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or four years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid drivers license. Appropriate Iowa Electrical license required. Previous experience in using and maintaining a variety of test equipment voltmeters hand and power tools.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as electrical codes safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with fellow employees and others with an interest in the organization. Ability to provide instruction and direction to semi-skilled and unskilled assistants.

ANALYTICAL and REASONING SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as motor amperages voltages and circuit requirements proportions percentages area circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral diagram or schedule form.

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS

Knowledge and use of building control computer systems. Must be able to use the computer process work orders and time tracking and enter accounting information. Able to retrieve and print information from various computer programs when needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop kneel crouch or crawl and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 25 pounds frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to the risk of electrical shock. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; outside weather conditions; extreme heat and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals and extreme cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

Will perform other duties as may be assigned by the superintendent or designee necessary and appropriate to the achievement of the program and/or District goals and objectives.
