PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The BBC Audio Science Unit is a world-leading centre for celebrating and championing science and ideas.


The team is the centre for science programmes on Radio 4 and the World Service as well as global podcasts. We cover all aspects of science tech health engineering psychology natural history space science and more. Current programmes and podcasts include Uncharted with Hannah Fry Inside Science Inside Health Health Check Science in Action All in the Mind CrowdScience and Unexpected Elements. We reach over 270 million people across the world every week. We are based at BBCs newest greenest and most technologically advanced broadcast facility - Central Square Cardiff. BBC Audio and BBC Wales have brought together their network radio production teams in Cardiff and Bristol. It means our colleagues will have opportunities for collaborating developing ideas and their progressing their careers. Our team deliver a wide range of output across science factual rural affairs food documentaries current affairs music and drama for all BBC UK Radio networks the World Service and BBC Sounds.


BBC Audio has around 670 editorial and technical staff who create more than 100 hours of original audio every day. Our podcasts and radio programmes are heard across the UK and around the world and we work with some of the biggest names in music entertainment and journalism. We collaborate with world class partners to deliver social value. This is just a selection of the 22500 programmes we work on every year - will need to demonstrate a real enthusiasm for programme making and an informed interest in speech radio be a good team player and have the attitude and aptitude to develop in this multi-skilled role.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • A specialist knowledge of science and/or health
  • A proven ability to identify and communicate stories in these genres.
  • The ability to handle tight deadlines and changing priorities
  • A knowledge and understanding of the best in audio and podcasting.
  • Ideas that will engage audiences on air

DESIRABLE:

  • Digital audio editing
  • Experience of recording on location
  • Working in a fast-paced environment
  • Working as part of a team
