This recruitment is NOT for the entry-level Emergency Medical Technician I (Recruit) (AM-01). Applicants must possess a current valid State of Hawaii Board of Medical Examiners Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B) Certificate to meet minimum qualification requirements.
TheHonolulu Emergency Services Departmentis recruiting for licensed Emergency Medical Technician IIprofessionals dedicated to providing critical basic life support services and emergency medical care at the scene of accidents or illness and during patient transport.This is a rewarding hands-on opportunity for professionals committed to helping others and making a direct impact on community health and safety.
What You Will Do:- Respond to emergency medical calls throughout the community.
Drive and/or accompany an ambulance in response to emergency medical service calls.
Evaluate the condition of injured or ill persons.
Treat and dress wounds.
Prepare accurate medical/legal documentation of care rendered.
- Irregular hours rotating and/or night shifts weekend and/or holidays.
- Must be available to work at all locations on Oahu.
- Required use of safety and protective equipment.
- Possible exposure to communicable diseases bodily fluids and hazardous materials.
- Driving under hazardous road traffic and weather conditions.
- Lifting and moving patients under extreme conditions.
- Working in hazardous or unpredictable surroundings.
POSITION-SPECIFIC INFORMATION
There is one (1) vacancy with the Administration Division:This is a permanent civil service position.
Must have a commercial drivers license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements prior to the end of probation.
There is one (1) vacancywith theEmergency Medical Services Division (EMS):- This is a temporary (limited-term) position.
- Position participates in the MOBILE EMERGENCY CARE SPECIALIST TRAINING PROGRAM
- Program Overview:
- Training provided through the Kapiolani Community College Mobile Intensive Care Technician (Paramedic) courses
- Combines classroom instruction with progressively difficult field assignments
- Leads to journey-level advanced life support (paramedic) level
- Program Requirements:
- Must be completed within a reasonable time to maintain employment
- Continuation in the Program is based on:
- Successful completion of all training phases
- Timely State EMT-P licensure
- Service Commitment Requirement:
- Two (2) years of service with the Citys Emergency Medical Services following State EMT-P licensure

At the time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
The following requirements must be met as of January 31 2026 or as stated:
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
1) Graduation from high school;and
2) Satisfactory completion of a State of Hawaii Department of Health approved Emergency Medical Technician (Basic Life Support) training program.
LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
Required Prior to Appointment for both Administration and EMS Divisions:
1) Appropriate valid drivers license (automobile/Type 3);
2) Current Hawaii Board of Medical Examiners Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B) Certificate;
3) Current State Department of Transportation medical examination certificate.
The State of Hawaii does not have reciprocity with other States or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. You must meet the licensing requirements set by the State of Hawaii. For licensing requirements please refer to Requirement: You must submit evidence of your State of Hawaii EMT-B Certificate to be given credit. Prior to Completion of Probation for Administration Division only:

All licenses and certifications must be valid at the time of hire and maintained throughout employment. Maintenance of these licenses/certifications and a satisfactory driving record is a condition of employment.

EMPLOYMENT SUITABILITY:
Emergency Medical Technicians must possess sound moral character integrity and credibility in addition to the ability to provide emergency medical services. They must have the ability to make sound judgments in emergency situations and must be capable of driving an ambulance safely in response to calls for emergency medical services. If selected the candidates background and driving record will be reviewed to determine the candidates suitability for employment as an Emergency Medical Technician II.
To determine employment suitability for the position of Emergency Medical Technician II the Department of Human Resources will review criminal convictions driving records dismissals from employment and separations from military service under other than honorable conditions.
