Job Title: Marine Pilot / Harbor Pilot
Location: Oman
Purpose:
Under the supervision of the Marine Services Manager / Senior Pilot the Marine Pilot ensures the safe handling of vessels entering and leaving the port overseeing marine operations efficiently and safely.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide pilotage services to ships safely and efficiently.
- Supervise special towage operations as directed by marine management.
- Conduct Ship-to-Ship (STS) operations when required.
- Coordinate and communicate effectively with port authorities tugs and other relevant parties prior to operations.
- Maintain strong working relationships with tug crews port control and other stakeholders.
- Provide on-the-job training for trainee pilots and assist in training marine staff.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation as per company policies.
- Keep updated knowledge of local marine environment to advise vessel masters.
- Monitor navigation aids and report malfunctions promptly.
- Coordinate with GSO regarding quay wall or mooring equipment damage and report immediately.
- Advise marine management on operational improvements and participate in departmental meetings.
- Represent the company professionally at all times.
- Participate in a 24-hour roster system with other pilots to ensure continuous coverage.
Qualifications & Skills:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Nautical Science Marine Navigation Maritime Transportation or equivalent.
Certification & Experience:
- Minimum COP as marine pilot (local) or COC Master Mariner equivalent (expats).
- At least 5 years of pilotage experience including handling large ships in harbour areas.
- Working knowledge of conventional and tractor tug operations.
- STCW certification and other mandatory maritime courses.
Skills & Competencies:
- Thorough familiarity with all types of vessels calling at port.
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills for marine situations.
- Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
- Ability to prepare accurate reports and maintain documentation.
- Strong interpersonal skills to interact with colleagues management and external parties.
- Leadership skills to motivate and guide a small team.
- Ability to train potential pilots tug masters and crews in marine operations.
- Proficiency in IT or demonstrated aptitude.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
- Work takes place in and around the port on various types of vessels.
- Must be able to work rotating shifts (days evenings nights) including overtime weekends and holidays.
- Must be available at short notice to cover absences or emergencies.
- Expected to observe all safety and health requirements.
- Must be able to manage marine operations in all weather conditions.
