Job Summary
POSITION: PHLEBOTOMIST
DEPARTMENT: RURAL HEALTH CLINICFLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT
JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for efficiently and accurately obtaining and preparing specimens for analysis and performing various screening tests.
JOB RELATIONSHIPS:
Responsible to: Rural Health Clinic Director
Positions Directly Supervised: None
Regular Contact with: All Hospital departments Physicians and the public

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Serves patients by identifying the best method for retrieving blood samples and other specimens preparing specimens for laboratory testing and performing screening procedures.
- Obtains blood specimens and collects nonblood specimens such as urine sputum and throat swabs for laboratory testing.
- Verifies patient identification and explains sampling procedures to patients.
- Reassures patients who are nervous about sampling procedures and applies dressings to wounds created by blood draws.
- Prepares specimens and delivers them to appropriate locations for testing.
- Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique following department procedures and observing isolation procedures.
- Verifies test requisitions and bring discrepancies to the attention of applicable personnel.
- Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician nursing staff or reference laboratory referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification and notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.
- Retrieves lab results and enters them into proper patient charts to be reviewed by the provider.
- Maintains a safe secure clean and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
- Ensures that the clinics phlebotomy supplies and equipment are well-organized and maintained
- Reports all unsafe/hazardous conditions defective equipment etc. to the supervisor immediately
- Adheres to strict infection control and safety guidelines
- Understands rules and regulations set forth by Franklin Medical Center. Maintains a good working relationship with fellow employees physicians and patients.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Phlebotomy certification preferred.
Work Experience: Phlebotomy experience desirable. Clinic or hospital experience desired.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
- Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR)
- Proficiency in venipuncture and other blood collection techniques
- Interpersonal skills and compassion
- Analyzing information critical thinking and problem solving
- Attention to detail to ensure accuracy
- Compassion courtesy and the ability to calm patients during blood collection
- Basic computer skills
Physical Requirements:
- Remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time
- Occasionally move about the office and facility campus to access various departments and patient care areas.
- Constantly position self such as bending or stooping to maintain equipment and provide patient care
- Constantly operates a computer office and Lab machinery
- Ability to communicate information accurately so others will understand.
- Ability to observe details at close range.
- Frequently move boxes equipment etc. weighing up to 20 pounds across office for various needs.
OSHA EXPOSURE CLASS A: EMPLOYEES IN THIS JOB CLASSIFICATION HAVE EXPOSURE TO BLOOD-BORNE PATHOGENS.
