DESCRIPTION:
The Deputy Fire Marshal supervises plans organizes manages and coordinates the activities of the Districts Fire Prevention Bureau with responsibilities that include fire safety code compliance public education fire cause and arson investigation commercial/residential/industrial building and construction inspections and plan checks to ensure compliance with fire codes and ordinances. The Deputy Fire Marshal is responsible for the enforcement of all laws ordinances and regulations related to protecting lives and property from fire conducting and overseeing fire origin investigations managing public outreach for fire prevention education and providing highly complex assistance to higher-level management.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The position of Deputy Fire Marshal receives general direction from the Fire Chief / Fire Marshal.

Experience and Education:
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge skills and abilities would be:
Education and Experience:
Possession of an Associate of Arts degree or equivalent from an accredited post-secondary institution with major coursework in fire service public administration business administration or a closely related field. Bachelors Degree is highly desirable.
Equivalent to four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in Fire Prevention and Inspection or building inspection.
This classification requires the use of a Fire District vehicle while conducting District business. To drive individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely and must possess and maintain a valid Class C California motor vehicle operators license with ability to ensure insurability under the Districts vehicle insurance policy.
Completion of the following California State Fire Training courses:
Fire Inspector 1A 1B 1C 1D 2A 2B 2C and 2D
Plans Examiner 1A 1B and 1C
Possession of California State Fire Training Fire Investigation 1A 1B and 1C certifications are highly desirable.
Possession and maintenance of a Certificate of Completion (PC 832) for the course in arrest search and seizure as issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training or is required within one (1) year of appointment.

While performing the duties of this position the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; operate office equipment requiring repetitive arm/hand movements when assigned to the office. The incumbent may also sit for extended periods of time and must have the ability to change positions frequently.
Specific vision abilities are as outlined by DMV requirements. The incumbent must have the ability to discriminate among colors and shades of color and have hearing sufficient to test alarms and other auditory devices. Must be able to coordinate more than one limbs movement simultaneously to occasionally drive and navigate simultaneously. Incumbent occasionally works at heights greater than 10 feet climb ladders or steps to reach objects use stomach and lower back muscles to support the body repeatedly or continually over time and walk over rough uneven or rocky surfaces.
When responding to emergency incidents must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time bend and stoop repeatedly; lift and use arms above shoulder level and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

When responding to emergency incidents the incumbent may be exposed to a variety of weather conditions including very hot and cold temperatures and work in small cramped areas.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbents must comply with the requirements of this position to wear respiratory protective equipment whenever necessary.
Successful completion of a physical examination and drug screen full background check including but not limited to: DOJ fingerprinting credit check and criminal history review.

Compensation and Benefits:
Compensation: $93256.80 - $113355.84 (Base Pay not including eligible incentives based on 2025-2026 Rates)
Education: Up to 10.0% of base pay
Uniform Allowance: $900.00 Annually
Vacation: Based on years of employment (minimum of 12 hours of per month)
Sick Leave: 18 hours per month
Probationary Period: Twelve (12) Months; subject to an extension of up to six (6) months.
