Description

The Animal Care and Management Animal Husbandry Assistant (AHA) provides support to the Animal Care and Management Program at Alamance Community College. This role involves leading and performing the care and maintenance of our animal colony ensuring that all animal care standards are met while supporting students and student workers engaged in caring for our animals. This position requires a commitment to providing excellent animal welfare a willingness to learn skills to work effectively in a team environment and the ability to work weekends.

Example of Duties

This position performs and directs the daily operations of the animal colony and includes:

  • Providing daily care for animals on campus and at the Bill and Nancy Covington Education Center. This position is directly responsible for daily animal care on weekends and at any other time that classes are not in session and/or when student workers are not available.
  • Delivering basic medical treatments to colony animals as prescribed and trained by the Attending Veterinarian.
  • Maintaining clean sanitized and organized animal housing lab areas and laundry according to established protocols and health and safety guidelines.
  • Recording and maintaining accurate records of animal health behavior and lab inventory (including food and supplies).
  • Maintaining all USDA-required animal husbandry documentation and providing summary reports to IACUC twice a year.
  • Developing and maintaining the Animal Husbandry SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) used by students student workers and other employees.
  • Providing training of support for and daily oversight of employed student workers including setting the schedules and activities of these employees.
  • Providing training of support for and daily oversight of enrolled students performing animal husbandry activities including setting the schedules and activities of these students.
  • Ensuring compliance with all local state and federal regulations regarding animal care and laboratory operations.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned by the Department Head Attending Veterinarian or supervising staff.

Typical Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework in Animal Science Veterinary Medical Technology Animal Care and Management or a related field.
  • Previous experience working with animals in a professional setting.
  • Basic understanding of animal behavior and welfare.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain strict protocols.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work well both independently and within a team.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks requiring bending lifting and standing for extended periods.
  • Google Office Suite/Microsoft Office Suite (or similar) proficiency for animal care and management document creation and management.
  • Strong written/database documentation skills; strong attention to detail.
  • Availability to work flexible hours including some early mornings evenings and weekends as required. The work schedule is determined by the Department Head and/or Attending Veterinarian.
    • Please note that this position has required weekend hours.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working in an educational setting particularly in a community college.
  • Experience managing an animal colony.
  • Associates Degree in Animal Care and Management Technology Veterinary Medical Technology Animal Science or similar field
