Description of Work
The Industrial Hygiene Inspector position conducts inspections to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations governing asbestos and lead-based paint abatement and renovation activities. The role supports the statewide Asbestos Program and Lead Hazard Management Program by evaluating work sites in residential commercial and child-occupied facilities to protect workers the public and the environment. Responsibilities include identifying health hazards documenting violations and recommending corrective actions to maintain safety standards.Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Experienced in conducting compliance inspections for asbestos and lead-based paint activities across demolition abatement and renovation projects in pre1978 target housing and childoccupied facilities; consistently verifies work practices and documents violations with corrective action recommendations.
Advanced proficiency in identifying chemical physical and biological hazards at work sites; evaluates processes and containment measures and recommends sitespecific controls to protect workers the public and the environment.
Intermediate proficiency in collecting and handling samples of suspect asbestoscontaining materials and leadbased paint; maintains photographic evidence and detailed field notes to support regulatory findings.
Advanced proficiency in preparing technically accurate grammatically correct inspection reports and compliance documentation; communicates findings clearly to contractors property owners and program stakeholders.
Demonstrated expertise in conducting EPA AHERA school inspections and submitting compliance reports to federal authorities; integrates inspection outcomes with program enforcement workflows when required.

The Health Hazards Control Unit oversees asbestos and lead safety programs in North Carolina. It manages permitting for removal projects and demolition notifications accredits individuals performing asbestos management and certifies firms and personnel involved in lead-based paint activities. The unit conducts inspections to ensure proper work practices approves and accredits training courses and providers and educates the public on health risks from asbestos and lead exposure. It also delivers presentations on hazards and state requirements for safe renovation and removal practices.
