Job Summary

Position Description

The position provides introductory experience in the administrative and implementation of parks and recreation programs events and recreation facilities. The internship will focus on administrative and management duties as well as the structure coordination direction and development of the service area. This internship will provide experiential education that will increase the interns marketability and experience.


Duration: 11-13 weeks May-August (negotiable depending on internship needs)
Hours: 40 hours per week
Rate of Pay: $17.23 19.41/hour depending on experience

Essential Job Functions

Internships can be designed to meet the specific areas of interest qualifications and desired experiences of the student. The student will have the opportunity to participate in planning the internship experience. All interns can expect to gain experience in budgeting planning marketing supervising scheduling customer service and training. Interns will have learning opportunities in special events park maintenance golf course and community center operations (including a water park and ice arena). The student will become familiar with the entire operation of the Parks and Recreation Department during their internship.

The City of Inver Grove Heights agrees to provide:
A comprehensive experience designed to expose the intern to the many areas of Parks andRecreation administration
Supervision by a permanent full-time staff person for guidance through the internship
Clearly defined responsibilities weekly meetings to provide feedback on the interns performanceand periodical evaluations to the interns university as necessary
The opportunity to be treated as a full-time employee with access to elements that would be helpfulin their professional growth
Assignments that are meaningful and a beneficial to both the intern and the department.
A letter of recommendation at the successful completion of their internship

The Intern agrees to:
Have a clear set of learning objectives for the internship.
Accept the Departments philosophy methods leadership and program.
Be prepared daily.
Maintain a professional image and attitude.
Communicate with assigned supervisor on a continual basis and address questions concerns and any problems in their area of responsibility.
Be prepared to work hard learn and have fun.
Understand that the standard work week is Monday through Friday 9 - 5:30 but that as a recreation professional you will be needed on nights and weekends occasionally.
Complete universitys requirements for the internship program.
Complete and submit reports and assignments to Agency and Academic Supervisor on time.
Shall complete an evaluation of the internship program and process by the end of the internship.
Complete other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

Completion of at least two years of study in a related post-secondary program
Strong communication and organizational skills
Knowledge and/or experience working with recreation programs and activities
Demonstrates problem solving skills
Computer skills on variety of software programs
Ability to interact with public in a positive manner
Ability to work independently and with people of all ages and abilities
Ability to work a flexible schedule which includes some evenings and weekends
Responsible and self-motivated

ABOUT INVER GROVE HEIGHTS PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT


The City of Inver Grove Heights is a developing community of approximately 37000 people. The city is in the northeastern portion of Dakota County approximately 10 miles south of St. Paul.


The City of Inver Grove Heights Park and Recreation Department oversees 32 parks including an 18-hole disc golf course and an off-leash dog area outdoor athletic complex an 18-hole championship golf course and additional 9-hole executive course and a community center. A wide array of sports recreation activities lessons and special events are available for citizens of all ages and abilities. The Department is made up of four divisions: Parks Recreation Community Center and Inver Wood Golf Course.


The Recreation Division provides a broad spectrum of leisure services to meet the needs of all segments of the community. This includes group and individual programming to promote a high quality of life through positive social cultural psychological emotional and physiological development.


The Parks Division provides maintenance development and forestry programs. It is responsible for the
acquisition planning and development of park facilities to meet the varied recreation and leisure
needs of the citizens of Inver Grove Heights.


The VMCC Division provides a full-service community center that includes fitness aquatics indoor ice gymnasium and community meeting rooms. The VMCC is a special revenue fund that strives to be self-sustainable through revenue from the programs and services provided in the facility. The facility also includes the National Guard Drill floor and offices.


The Inver Wood Golf Course Division provides an 18-hole championship course 9-hole executive course practice facility and clubhouse. The golf course is an enterprise fund that strives to pay for its operations and debt service through revenue generation from golf operations.
