At the Faculty of Engineering and Science Department of Materials and Production a PhD stipend is available within the doctoral programme Materials Science Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from 01.03.2026 or soon thereafter. The duration of the position is 3 years.
Your work tasks
The PhD position is within the Sustainable Manufacturing Systems (SUSTAIN) of the PhD projectis the implementation of circular economy in manufacturing companies considering circularity assessment and the interrelationsto environmental impact products business models and supply chains.
The aim of the PhD projectis toanalyze challenges in industry in relation tothe development and implementation of circular manufacturing andidentifyand develop methods models and tools that can be applied to accelerate the transition towards circular manufacturing in industry with a particular focus on identifying analyzing and assessing circularity options through circularity assessment practices taking into account a companys current products and manufacturing capabilities and capacities.
Your competencies
The PhD project is expected to includein-depth case studies withvarious typesof data collection in a range of manufacturing companies. Thus the PhD student needs to work withvarious typesof quantitative and qualitative research methods.
The candidate is required to have an Engineering degree on masters level and strong knowledge within Circular Economy and Circular Production.
Qualification requirements
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1124 of September 19 2025 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

The Department of Materials and Production (MP) is a wide-ranging research and educational environment at Aalborg University. The Departments mission is to meet the futures demands for new materials and production systems by directing the whole value chain from basic material understanding to materials applications in mechanical construction industrial production and management. The department has several strong international and innovative research groups that comprise everything from basic science to strategic and applied research. Specifically in relation to this position we have facilities for synthesis and characterization of materials covering the range from the atomic scale in the cleanroom and materials labs to fabrication of components and devices.
