Youth Test Shopper

Status: Casual

Salary Range: $16.60 per hour

Work mode: Onsite

Location: 7120 Hurontario Street Mississauga

Hours of work: Casual /No guarantee of hours

Who we are:Working under the guidance of a Public Health Inspector the youth test shopper will assist with monitoring retailers in Peel Region for compliance with youth access restrictions under the Smoke-Free Ontario Act.

What you will do in this role:

  • Ride as a passenger in a Public Health Inspectors vehicle travelling to various retailers in Peel Region attempting to purchase tobacco and vapour products.
  • Write detailed and accurate notes in an evidence book with respect to their actions and observations made while attempting to purchase the tobacco or vapour product
  • Communicate the events that occurred to the Public Health Inspectors accompanying them
  • Identify the person who sold them the product
  • Attend and give credible testimony in court (often during school hours)
  • Comprehend the tobacco control program including its goals and objectives

What the role requires:

  • Currently enrolled in secondary school
  • Applicants must be 15 or 16 years of age and retirement will be no later than 18 years of age

Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to comprehend the tobacco control program including its goals and objectives
  • Ability to grasp and understand concepts relating to law enforcement and prosecutions
  • Ability to travel in Public Health Inspectors vehicles to multiple tobacco and vapour retailers
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Carry out controlled purchase attempts of tobacco and vapour products at retail locations requesting specified products under the direction of the Public Health Inspector
  • Demonstrate the ability and willingness to identify individuals who sell vapour or tobacco products
  • Be willing and able to allow photos (of themselves) to be used as evidence
  • Strong observational skills and ability to recall details and enter these observations legibly in a notebook
  • Ability and willingness to attend court when needed during school hours and give testimony
  • Ability to work flexible hours and days
  • Self confident and self assured
  • Ability to maintain confidential information
  • High standard of personal integrity honesty and respect
  • Ability to think under pressure and use judgement in difficult situations

Work Mode & Job Location: Transportation to testing locations will be provided; however occasional travel to and from 7120 Hurontario Street Mississauga and 5 Ray Lawson Boulevard Brampton - Court House) may be required at the employees own time and expense.

Hours of Work: Casual/No guarantee of hours

Interview: Our interview process will be conducted in person at 7120 Hurontario Street Mississauga.
