About the Internship:
NCDITs Transportation Division is offering a forward-looking internship and fellowship opportunity with the STARS (Statewide Transportation Automated Records System) team. This hybrid experience will introduce the intern to STARS coding methodology and actively engage them in early-stage planning and preparation for the STARS Rewrite Project.
This role is ideal for candidates with a background programming business intelligence (BI) and data analysis who are interested in modernizing legacy transportation systems and gaining exposure to large-scale government IT transformation projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Learn and apply STARS coding methodology in preparation for the upcoming STARS Rewrite Project
Collaborate with STARS team members to support system analysis documentation and rewrite planning efforts
Analyze STARS data structures to better understand system workflows dependencies and reporting needs
programming skills to support modernization concepts and technical discussions
Assist with BI and data analysis tasks including data interpretation and insight development
Engage regularly with NCDIT staff across teams to gain a comprehensive understanding of STARS data business processes and system usage
Participate in team meetings knowledge-sharing sessions and professional development activities
Ideal Candidate:
Strong interest in system modernization and application rewrite initiatives
Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively in a hybrid- team-based environment
Willingness to learn legacy system architecture and translate it into modern technical frameworks
Curiosity and adaptability when working with complex data systems

Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be a currently enrolled full-time student in a bachelors masters or professional level program at an accredited or recently graduated from a North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) by May 2026.
- 24 credit hours completed.
- Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (on 4.0 scale)
- Has legal right to work in the U.S. and do not need sponsorship
