AECOM is seeking a motivated and skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer to support the design and construction of buildings within the Buildings Places (BP) business line. This opportunity can be based out of our Markham Mississauga or Pickering offices with opportunities for hybrid work available. This is a new role for the team.
This is an exciting opportunity for a Senior-level Mechanical Engineer with extensive experience in building systems to serve as the Technical Lead and Job Captain for the Mechanical Discipline on multi-discipline projects for the Defence and Transportation Market Sectors. The role also involves mentoring junior staff contributing to technical excellence and supporting project delivery across a wide range of building typologies.

Major Responsibilities
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer you will:
- Lead the design of Plumbing Fire Protection and HVAC systems for complex building projects.
- Serve as the Technical Lead for the Mechanical Discipline providing specialized technical input and oversight on studies designs and construction documentation.
- Review and prepare HVAC design concepts layouts and calculations ensuring compliance with project requirements and industry standards.
- Develop plumbing system layouts including domestic water distribution sanitary drainage venting storm drainage and specialty systems such as oil grit interceptors and trench drains.
- Provide fire suppression indicative design including wet/dry sprinkler systems standpipes clean agent systems and specialized suppression systems for unique applications (e.g. hangars).
- Oversee Building Automation System (BAS) design and ensure seamless integration with other building systems.
- Perform quality control reviews of design calculations drawings and technical specifications to ensure high-quality deliverables.
- Prepare and review technical specification sections and contribute to the development of engineering budgets and schedules.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure seamless coordination across all building systems.
- Mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers and technicians fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.
- Actively participate in construction administration including reviewing submittals responding to RFIs and conducting site visits to ensure project compliance with design intent.
- Support the preparation of technical reports and deliver results in a clear and concise manner to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Key Technical Expertise
The ideal candidate will have expertise in:
HVAC Design and Construction Administration:
- Hydronic heating and cooling systems.
- Duct air distribution and terminal/central airside equipment selection.
- Net-zero heating and cooling solutions.
- General HVAC best practices.
Plumbing Design and Construction Administration:
- Plumbing fixture selection and optimization of domestic water distribution.
- Sanitary and storm drainage systems.
- Specialty drainage systems (e.g. oil grit interceptors trench drains).
- Domestic hot water production systems.
Fire Suppression Design and Construction Administration:
- Wet and dry sprinkler systems.
- Standpipes and clean agent gas/aerosol systems.
- Specialized fire suppression systems for unique applications.
Building Automation Systems (BAS):
- Design and integration of BAS for efficient building operations.
Qualifications :
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum 6 years of experience in designing HVAC plumbing and fire protection systems for commercial institutional and light industrial facilities.
- Demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education may be considered.
Preferred Requirements:
- Professional Engineering (.) license is strongly preferred.
- PWGSC/PSPC - Level II Secret Clearance preferred for Federal Projects.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD MicroStation and REVIT for 2D and 3D design and drafting.
- Experience with Carrier HAP Trane Trace or Design Builder
- Strong communication skills (spoken and written) with the ability to present technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Experience with mechanical system installation service and maintenance requirements.
- Experience mentoring junior staff and contributing to team development.
- Familiarity with sustainable design practices and net-zero building solutions.
