PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Hiring Salary: $30.64 - $38.30/hour

This is classified as VHBE (Variable Hour Benefit Eligible) where the selected candidate will work up to 40 hours per week. The selected candidate will be eligible to elect Medical Dental and Vision benefitsaccruepaid time off and receive 11 paid holidays.

OVERVIEW OF POSITION / DEPARTMENT

Aurora Water is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the drinking water sanitary sewer and storm drainage systems treatment of drinking water and non-potable reclaimed wastewater for irrigation billing and collection public outreach and water conservation acquisition and development of future water rights major capital projects programs and quality control for regulatory compliance and public health.

The Water Treatment Maintenance Specialist in the Water Treatment Division participates in a number of activities at the water and wastewater treatment plants that include but are not limited to repair and maintenance of treatment plant equipment and facilities receiving chemical deliveries including chlorine learning the operation of the treatment plant snow removal and facility housekeeping. The person in this job will work around hazardous chemicals perform laboratory testing and must be able to pass a respiratory medical physical and it is recommended they have the Hepatitis B immunization series.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leads work crews in the repair and maintenance of water wastewater reuse equipment water storage tanks and treatment facilities
  • Assists with scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repair of water plant equipment structures and buildings
  • Assists in monitoring plant operations including assisting with laboratory tests on raw and treated water and chemical changes
  • Experience with chemical feeders tanks pumps motors piping systems and valves
  • Mixes and loads chemicals
  • Maintains plant security
  • Performs janitorial building and grounds maintenance
  • Uses tools such as hand tools shovel jack hammer and power tools
  • Required to participate in confined space entries at whatever capacities assigned
  • Assists with snow removal activities and snow standby call duties
  • Basic knowledge of the city computer systems
  • Performs other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge skills and abilities may be considered.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED

Experience

  • 3 years related work experience required

Preferred Experience:

  • Water or wastewater treatment related experience preferred

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of servicing repairing adjusting and testing machines devices moving parts and equipment that operate primarily based on mechanical principles.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and requirements of a water treatment plant
  • Knowledge of personal computers and related software.

Abilities:

  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees at all levels as well as members of the community
  • Ability to operate or receive training on various types of maintenance and construction equipment
  • Ability to take part in Aurora Waters Permit Required Confined Space Rescue Team

Skills:

  • Skilled in the use of hand tools preferred.

Licenses and/or Certificates:

  • State Issued Drivers license with a good driving history
  • Colorado Water Operator C certification

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel:

When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:

  • Moderate to heavy physical work.
  • Requires the ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds with or without assistance
  • Requires frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing over 100 pounds with assistance
  • Considerable walking and standing
  • Frequently performs activities requiring a full range of body movement including bending stooping kneeling pushing pulling and climbing
  • Hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation of equipment and vehicles
  • Vision for reading gauges and written instructions
  • Hearing/listening for instructions and warning signals

Work Environment:

  • Works indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to noise dust and fumes.
  • Works in and around chemical feed areas with exposure to hazardous chemicals while wearing appropriate PPE.
  • Some work may be performed in confined spaces with exposure to raw sewage; will be exposed to low and medium electrical voltage.

Equipment Used:

  • Operates equipment and vehicles common to utilities maintenance functions.
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle cell phone tools etc.) in the course of their employment.

The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16 April 10 July 2 and December 24.
