Description

The City of Oxnards Information Technology Department is seeking aSenior Infrastructure Technicianto support and maintain the Citys enterprise network and technology infrastructure. This position plays a critical role in ensuring reliable secure and efficient network operations across all City departments including public safety and provides technical leadership in the design implementation and support of complex IT systems.


WHAT YOULL DO:
  • Install repair and maintain MDCs (Mobile Dispatch Computers) mounted in police cruisers and fire trucks.

  • Responsible for the physical health of the citys network. This involves racking and stacking servers managingUPS (battery backup)systems to ensure uptime during power outages and maintaining the neatly structured cabling in network closets across City Hall and other municipal buildings.

  • Troubleshoot advanced issues with City employees workstations including complex software conflicts hardware failures or network connectivity issues that require a senior technicians diagnostics.

  • Assign complex licenses troubleshooting email routing issues managing distribution lists and ensuring single sign-on (SSO) integration works correctly for city staff.

  • Create thestandard system images(the pre-installed software and settings) to set up computers for new hires or upgrade cycles.

  • Assist in maintaining the network connectivity forsecurity cameras(IP cameras) andbadge access door controllersat various city facilities ensuring physical security systems remain online and recording.

  • Diagnose connectivity issues across the Citys Wide Area Network (WAN). This could involve troubleshooting a Wi-Fi access point in the Oxnard Public Library fixing a switch port at the Water Division or tracing a dead ethernet port at the City Corps offices.

  • Manage the Citys fleet of city-issued smartphones and tablets (iPads/iPhones) using MDM software. This includes pushing out mandatory security updates remotely wiping lost devices and ensuring city data is segregated and secure on mobile hardware.

  • Assist with checking daily backup logs to ensure critical city data (finance records permit data etc.) is successfully backed up.

  • Act as the boots on the ground escort for outside vendorssuch as ISP technicians (e.g. Frontier/Spectrum) or specialist cabling contractorsensuring they install equipment according to City of Oxnard standards and safety protocols.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED / SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Receives direction and general supervision from higher-level supervisory staff as assigned; and may provide technical direction to other IT staff as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Senior Infrastructure Technician is responsible for the diagnosis of problems and networks assisting in the design planning and coordination of the installation of various data distribution computer networks such as Wide Area Networks (WAN) and Local Area Networks (LAN) and the interconnection of the two for all City departments.

WORK SCHEDULE:The normal work week is Monday through Thursday 8:00am to 6:00pm and alternating Fridays 8:00am to 5:00pm. Depending on the work assignment staff may be assigned to a shift that is outside the standard work addition this position may be required to be available to work additional hours in response to peaks in workloads and changes in department needs. The standard work environment varies depending on assignment but is typically either primarily in an office setting or out in the field.The City does not offer hybrid or remote work.

Please note:The Information Technology Department supports public safety personnel including the Police Department on a 24-hour 7-day-per-week schedule therefore the candidate may be required to be on call on a rotating basis subject to callback. As part of the selection process applicants will be required to successfully complete a thorough background investigation which may include a polygraph exam.

Essential Functions

(This class specification represents only the core areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the Department.)

  • Performs network engineering duties in the design test and support of network architecture and strategy network standards logical network design and network server capacity management; assists in the start-up shut-downs and recoveries from system halts.

  • Oversees and implements projects installs and implements operating systems problem solves data accessing for users and oversees security functions; develops and introduces environmental standards through participation in network design.

  • Provides technical support and training in the planning and implementation of LAN and WAN office automation and distributed systems; provides technical support and troubleshooting for hardware and software issues backup procedures and upgrading existing systems.

  • Performs preventative and corrective maintenance as necessary including printers storage devices cables connections and configurations for the support of the citys PC users.

  • Acts as technical project lead for the installation of LANs and the upgrade of hardware and software on existing networks; acts as a technical resources and liaison for City departments.

  • Provides technical troubleshooting problem isolation and assistance with problem resolution for the more complex problems with standard PC LAN hardware and software recommended by Information Services.

  • Conducts various tests on components equipment and software during installation to ensure all components are working properly and in accordance with city specifications.

  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Computer Science Information Systems Electronics EngineeringElectrical Engineering Voice/Data Communications Public/Business Administration or a related field.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience providing routine to complex technical support on a variety of computer applications local area networks and/or mid-range computers.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to effectively communicate in English both orally and in writing.

Employees are required to participate in the Citys direct deposit plan and are paid on a bi-weekly basis.

This position requires a 12 month probationary period.
