PRIMARY PURPOSE
Support special and general education teachers in meeting the instructional and personal care needs of students with disabilities in special and general education settings. Assist with implementation of classroom programs including self-help medical/physical supports behavior management and instruction. Work under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification:
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid Texas educational aide certificate (may be obtained after employment if not already held)
- Meet one of the following:
- Completion of two years of study at an institution of higher education (48 semester hours of college coursework); or
- Associates degree or higher; or
- Meet rigorous standards of quality through an approved course of study for paraprofessionals (e.g. ESC Region 13 courses)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Ability to work effectively with students with special needs
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Knowledge of general office equipment
- Ability to exercise good judgment and maintain professional relationships with students faculty and the public
Experience:
- Some experience working with children preferred
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Instructional Support
- Prepare instructional materials including modifying/adapting classroom activities and assignments under the direction of the teacher to support and reinforce IEP objectives.
- Assist with implementation of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) including providing accommodations under the teachers direction.
- Work with individual students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional or physical exercises assigned by the teacher or recommended by related service providers.
- Record and maintain academic behavioral and administrative data.
Student Support
- Assist students with physical needs including transferring lifting and positioning.
- Assist students with self-help and personal care needs including feeding toileting and hygiene.
- Implement behavior strategies outlined in the IEP and/or Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) or as directed by the teacher; inform the teacher of concerns or changes.
- Learn and adapt to each students medical physical communication and social-emotional needs.
- Monitor and support students throughout the school day including vocational sites field trips lunch hallways bus loading/unloading and outdoor areas.
- Maintain SAMA certification if required and implement de-escalation techniques; assist with physical containment in emergency situations as trained.
Other
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student and coworker information as required by FERPA.
- Participate in staff development faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
- Follow established schedules routines and approved lesson plans.
- Demonstrate flexibility in assignments and schedule adjustments.
- Assist in maintaining an organized and clean environment.
- Assist with inventory care and maintenance of materials and equipment.
- Maintain regular and consistent attendance.
- Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.

Lifting: Regular heavy lifting and transferring of students; must be able to lift and control up to 50 pounds.
Environment: Possible exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases; may involve aggressive or physical behavior initiated by students.
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control in potentially stressful environments; respond appropriately in crisis situations.
