Position Status: May-November term 18 hours per week (450 hours in total)


KEXPs Internship Program seeks to provide interns from historically under-invited and under-represented communities with hands-on work experience. KEXP internships are educational experiences and we seek applicants who are at the beginning of their career journey or embarking on a career change.


All internships are a limited term 18 hours per week (450 hours in total) and include:

  • $22 per hour compensation

Internship Position Summary: The KEXP Library & Archives provides staff with access to the information and media they need to keep the station operational. While the library largely supports the needs of the DJs the institutional archives are dedicated to organizing and preserving KEXPs rich history. T-shirts posters vinyl records photographs and documentation are just a small list of items that the Library & Archives is tasked with preserving for the future while making them accessible and useful in the present.


The intern will contribute to the maintenance and growth of the archives by assisting with a variety of projects aimed at collections organization and access while assisting with the further development of archival policies and procedures. The primary focus of this internship will involve archival tasks such as the arrangement and description of collections (writing finding aids and creating inventories) and creating digital access to items added to the digital asset management system. The intern will create detailed documentation of their work to add to KEXPs archival policies and procedures related to processing cataloging/description and digitization. Library specific projects will be assigned as needed to help with library backlogs which can include shelving and cataloging work.


Essential duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assist in writing documentation about arrangement and description policy and procedures
  • Identify arrange and describe archival collections
  • Create and maintain archival collection inventories
  • Write archival finding aids
  • Digitize assets of different format types such as photographs vinyl records and audio cassettes
  • Create and enhance access to digital collections in KEXPs digital asset management system by uploading digital content with detailed metadata sets
  • Work on Library specific projects as needed such as shelving CDs or cataloging music

Skills Learned:

  • Practical experience with archival arrangement and description
  • Compiling and delivering research reports
  • Working in groups on archival projects
  • Practical experience creating and managing library and archives metadata
  • Digitization standards and practices for various formats e.g. photographs documents analog audio

Working Conditions: The Library & Archives Intern is required to come into the office at least two days a week. Must be flexible with both working remotely or at the office depending on need and company policy based on public health recommendations at the time. Remote working will require a consistently quiet and productive space and office work operates in a typical business environment.

Requirements

General Qualifications:

  • Passion for and commitment to KEXPs mission
  • Basic understanding of the principles of organizing information in library and archives settings
  • Basic familiarity with item inventory metadata and cataloging standards for libraries and archives
  • Basic familiarity with collection and digital asset management systems
  • Some experience with spreadsheets and databases
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including comfort with delivering presentations
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative on projects
  • Commitment to maintain a high degree of accuracy and confidentiality
  • Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects at once
  • Comfortable working in groups

Physical Requirements: Long periods of being in a stationary position; operating a computer and other office equipment; frequently communicating by phone email and video conferencing; frequently remaining in a stationary position during meetings discerning meeting content expressing oneself and exchanging accurate information; occasionally move materials and boxes up and down shelves items may weigh up to 20 pounds.
