ONCOLOGY PHARMACIST

CANCER CENTER

PRN

SUMMARY:

The Oncology Pharmacist plays a critical role in the multidisciplinary care team dedicated to supporting cancer patients. This position involves the safe and effective management of chemotherapy and other oncology-related medications ensuring that patients receive the best possible therapeutic outcomes. The Oncology Pharmacist is responsible for reviewing and dispensing medication orders providing expert guidance on drug interactions side effects and dosage adjustments and offering patient education on proper medication collaboration with oncologists nurses and other healthcare professionals the Oncology Pharmacist works to optimize medication therapy improve patient care and enhance overall treatment efficacy.

Under a collaborative practice agreement the Oncology Pharmacist is also empowered to independently manage certain clinical situations such as adjusting supportive care regimens monitoring patient responses and making necessary interventions to ensure optimal outcomes. The purpose of this role is to ensure that oncology patients receive safe effective and personalized pharmaceutical care supporting both their immediate treatment needs and long-term health outcomes.

REQUIREMENTS:

Doctor of Pharmacy or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy required. Residency strongly preferred. Must be licensed as a Pharmacist with the Idaho State Board of Pharmacy.

  • Must obtain license from the Oregon State Board of Pharmacy within 90 days of hire.

In depth knowledge of local state and federal laws and regulations related to pharmacy and medication use processes is required. Minimum of three years of experience in a relevant pharmacy setting; residency may be accepted in lieu of three years experience. Relevant board certification is highly encouraged. Knowledge of standards of care for oncology patients is required. Within 6 months of hire Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross is required. (ACLS and/or PALS may be accepted in lieu of BLS) Other certifications may be required as identified in the SAHS Certification Crosswalk

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

Supervises and participates in the compounding and dispensing of chemotherapy and other antineoplastics. Minimizes drug waste minimizes unnecessary exposure to hazardous substances and manages the cost and reimbursement for antineoplastics.

Supports the multidisciplinary team by serving as the medication expert. Directs patient care patient education and participates in clinical decision making Works collaboratively with other health care professionals to develop institutional guidelines and make evidence-based decisions designed to improve patient care. Prescribes supportive care medications updates prescriptions and orders accompanying labs and tests through an inclusive oncology collaborative practice agreement.

Participates in policy and program development to improve safety efficacy and quality of cancer care. Participates in various departmental duties; material resource management clerical and financial responsibilities safety and other issues. Prepares pharmaceutical products for patients use by safe and cost-effective methods using acceptable professional standards. Provides mentorship and is a clinical resource for staff pharmacy students pharmacy residents and other healthcare providers in the area of medical oncology.

Demonstrates knowledge and skills to competently care for all assigned age groups (Neonate Child Adolescent Adult Geriatric as applicable). Revenue management: ensures the accuracy of documenting services and supplies provided to the patients. Clinical Services: Dedicated work in performing function that requires expert knowledge in oncology. Supervises technicians and pharmacy support staff. Excellent communication skills Adaptable to institutional roles and schedules. Lead and conduct meetings with multi-disciplinary care givers.
