Professor of Oral Microbiology Division of Oral Biosciences

(Permanent & Full-Time)


The Dublin Dental University Hospital is seeking a Professor of Microbiology to provide leadership of the Discipline of Microbiology. This is a Permanent Pensionable and Full-Time Position.

The overall purpose of the Professor of Microbiology is to provide research leadership and have responsibility for leading the delivery of all undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the area of Microbiology and for the delivery of the strategic needs of the Discipline and the DDUH.


The position reports and is accountable to the Head of the Division of Oral Microbiology and the Dean of Dental Affairs for educational and research matters.


Outline of Duties and Responsibilities


The key duties of the role are to act as Professor of Oral Microbiology in the Dublin Dental University Hospital and in particular to:

  • Providing research leadership of the Discipline of Microbiology by working closely with all members of the Discipline along with the wider DDUH and TCD to deliver on the mission of the School and Hospital.

  • Supporting all members of the Discipline in their day-to-day roles and in their career development.

  • Being responsible for the delivery of the strategic needs of the Discipline and the DDUH.

  • In collaboration with the School of Dental Science Trinity College and the DDUH leading the delivery of all undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessments in the area of Microbiology as required.

  • Leading dental curriculum planning and development.

  • Playing a leading role in contributing to quality reviews and accreditation processes.

  • Leading related research programmes within the Discipline to include publishing high impact research publications and secure funding.

  • Being responsible for the day to day running of the Oral Biosciences Microbiology Laboratories including diagnostic testing environmental monitoring and IPC.

  • Responsibility to oversee environmental monitoring of microbial risks associated with the built environment within the Dublin Dental Hospital.

  • Managing all budgets associated with the running of the Discipline and associated laboratories.

  • Working with all stakeholders to provide continued excellence in infection prevention and control in the DDUH nationally and internationally.

  • Playing a senior role in the management and strategic planning of the DDUH.

  • Reporting on all activities to the Executive Team and Board of the DDUH through the Head of Division of Oral Biosciences (Division IV).


    Other

  • Keep such records as may be required by the Dublin Dental University Hospital.

  • Maintain Continuous Professional (and Personal) Development.

  • Participate in the administration and promotion of the activities and interests of the Dublin Dental University Hospital and of the School of Dental Science Trinity College Dublin.

  • Initiate support and implement Continuous Quality Improvement and Accreditation initiatives appropriate to the service in agreement with the Executive Team.

  • Reside within such distance convenient to the designated work base as may be approved by the CEO.

  • Perform such other duties appropriate to the office as may be assigned to him/her by the Clinical Director/Dean/CEO.

  • The post holder will attend Divisional Meetings and all other meetings as required.

The extent and speed of change in the delivery of services is such that adaptability is essential to this level of appointment. The person chosen will be required to maintain enhance and develop their knowledge skills and aptitudes necessary to respond to changing situations. Qualifications Experience & Person Specification


Each candidate must have:


Academic

  • A primary and/or Masters degree and a PhD in Microbiology.

  • An extensive research portfolio to include a significant international publication record in the field of Microbiology with relevance to oral health and disease.

  • A history of securing substantial external research funding.

  • Extensive experience in running research teams and research administration.

  • Extensive experience in international collaborations.

  • Substantial experience in the design management and delivery of teaching and assessing Microbiology and associated subjects.

  • Experience in broader curriculum development innovation and management of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

  • Extensive experience in the supervision of postgraduate students (e.g. PhDs).

  • Experience in mentoring postdoctoral and junior academic staff.


Leadership

  • Demonstrable evidence of excellence in leadership and organisational skills in an academic environment.

  • The ability to lead the microbiology team in the development and implementation of teaching and research in the field of Microbiology as well as effective infection prevention and control (IPC) measures in the dental clinical environment.

  • The ability to work effectively with all members of the dental team and facilities staff in relation to the implementation of IPC measures.

  • The ability to imbed sustainability in the microbiology laboratory.

  • Experience in effective management of personnel.

  • Experience in effective management of budgets and resource allocation.

  • Experience in mentoring and motivating individual team members.

  • Experience in developing and implementing strategic plans.

  • Experience in contributing to quality review and accreditation processes.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.


Other

  • Be able to identify potential difficulties and formulate solutions.

  • Have a demonstrable adaptability to rapid changes taking place in the Hospital educational and health services in Ireland.

  • Have proven organisational and administrative skills.

  • Be competent in general use of information technology and computers office functions internet for research purposes email and preparation of presentation materials etc.

  • Be free from any defect or disease which would render him/her unsuitable to hold office and be in a state of health as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

  • Be of good character.
