Environment Health and Safety DepartmentKey Roles and Responsibilities
Coordinate the proper disposal of hazardous materials on both the main KC campus as well as sites at Westwood and Fairway facilities. This process includes the following areas of chemical waste disposal:
Responsible for creating hazardous waste determinations
Inventorying collecting inspecting labeling and disposing of hazardous and nonhazardous chemical wastes generated by university laboratories.
Coordinating with outside vendors to remove waste from campuses within regulated time limits
Monitoring satellite waste accumulation areas and chemical usage areas for compliance with regulations and university standards
Coordinating the proper disposal or recycling of:
Universal waste (used bulbs mercury containing equipment batteries)
Abandoned compressed gas cylinders
Oil/sludge in the garage oil water separators
Develop implement and maintain a waste minimization pollution prevention and chemical re-use program under the direction of the Director of EHS. Coordinating with outside vendors to properly recycle silver used in research activities. Assists with the collection and disposal of biohazardous waste and equipment decontamination.
Conducts and tracks safety evaluations of facilities areas and research laboratories to maintain a safe and healthy work environment. This will include having a thorough understanding of pertinent regulations various kinds of sampling equipment laboratory alarm systems and lab equipment associated with EHS responsibilities.
Administrates the chemical fume hood certification program including but not limited to:
coordinating with contractor to conduct certification
ensure repairs on fume hoods are done by coordinating with facilities
keep records of all certifications and changes to program
notify laboratory staff on compliance updates
Serve as an educational resource to faculty university personnel outside regulatory personnel and EHS office staff regarding environmental federal and state regulations and KUMC policies. Assists with the development of EHS plans policies and training.
Assists with emergency management activities this includes but is not limited to:
Help investigate and mitigate accidents spills losses thefts unauthorized receipts uses transfers disposals misadministration and other deviations from approved safety practices involving hazardous agents.
Help implement corrective actions as necessary.
Being on-call after hours.
Operates as an alternate emergency coordinator as outlined in the Universitys Contingency Plan.
Serve as the alternate EHS representative on the Emergency Planning committee.
Approves radioactive isotope orders pick-up radioactive shipments and properly check them in. Other duties may be assigned by supervisor based on business needs. Manages the physical copies of Safety Data Sheets for the university
Participate in required training which includes but is not limited to:
Annual 8hr HAZWOPER refresher
Annual Biosafety and Bloodborne Pathogen training
Annual Hazard Communication training
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) training
An introductory training related to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act within 30 days of hire. This training shall include but is not limited to online training review of the Universitys Contingency Plan and on-the-job training

Every 3 year DOT training with emphasis on hazardous waste shipment
Autoclave training
Annual Radiation Safety training
Serve as a key member of the Universitys Environment Health & Safety office. This includes collaborating with other EHS employees to develop and implement EHS programs to resolve compliance issues and regularly update the EHS Director regarding status of programs and any identified deficiencies.

Required Qualifications
Work Experience
Four years experience in the performance of the principal accountabilities described herein. Education may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
Demonstrated knowledge of DOT Hazardous Materials regulations EPA Hazardous Waste regulations and OSHA regulations.
Familiar with basic Microsoft office suite programs
Experience with: research laboratories chemical cleanup emergency response mercury spill cleanup chemotherapy spill clean-up infection control respiratory protection and chemical fume hood surveys
Experience with radioactive materials
Certifications/Licenses:
A valid drivers license
Preferred Qualifications
Education
Bachelors degree in relevant field (Chemistry Biology Environmental Science etc.)
Work Experience:
Experience working in a highly regulated environment and in a university hospital research or laboratory setting.
Education/Certification
40-hour HAZWOPER certified
Certification as a Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
Completion of Incident Command Systems Training
