Job Summary

This position operates and maintains all building equipment and systems to ensure reliable service over its expected lifetime. Engineers review and adjust equipment operations as needed to provide peak performance and energy efficiency. Respond to emergency maintenance needs for plumbing HVAC fire protection systems and other mechanical issues within the facility by making necessary repairs or notifying supervisors if work is beyond their skill level. Provide the necessary facility repairs (doors door closure lock repair walls lighting plumbing etc) necessary to maintain the facility in a reliable and safe condition. Provide basic systems electrical troubleshooting to be able to provide explanation and direction to a licensed electrician.

Fundamental duties are described below:

Responsible for the efficient operation of the equipment under their control to achieve energy efficiency and peak performance. Meet normal and contractual requirements for temperature and humidity control throughout critical controlled environments.

Monitor and troubleshoot using the BAS (building automation system) to maintain a comfortable environment for artifacts staff & visitors.

Responsible for performing routine preventative and major maintenance on all equipment within their charge as assigned by supervisor. Prioritize work to occur off season and if required to service equipment in operation minimize downtime. Service of all HVAC systems and associated equipment within the SMM Facilities.

Service of all air compressors.

Service of hydronic heat cooling and low pressure steam systems and devices.

Troubleshooting of electrical controls and systems. Service of low voltage systems under the provisions of a power limited electrical license

Organize and coordinate resources to ensure accurate timely and complete delivery of work. Collaborate and follow supervisor direction to assist in coordination and scheduling facility engineering and contractor projects so that they are completed on time and within budget and all service tickets are completed in a timely manner

Adapts to the requirements of individual situations and meet the needs of the museum and customer successfully. Actively support team concepts and effectively communicate with all team members visitors to the museum and other museum employees.

Accurately follow directions both written and verbal.

Focus and remain on task in a fast paced environment with minimal supervision.

Perform other duties as assigned. Examples of other work include but are not limited to assisting custodial or grounds staff with large projects service of custodial and grounds equipment assisting in office set up and break down up to and including cubicle and furniture assembly and disassembly assisting exhibit maintenance staff and snow removal if requested.

Attend paid training and certification classes to stay current and increase your skills as requested by your supervisor.

KSAs Cognitive Skills

Strong mechanical aptitude with knowledge of and experience with HVAC plumbing electrical pneumatics/DDC controls and refrigeration.

Must have strong background in general building and equipment repair and maintenance

Must have basic computer skills and knowledge and be willing to follow work directions in a largely paperless environment.

Ability to read blueprints and schematics.

Excellent building systems troubleshooting skills

Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.

Strong organizational skills.

Ability to work independently and under pressure.

Must be dependable and able to handle a varying workload.

KSAs - Physical Skills

Ability to work in high areas. Ability to work from aerial lifts at heights of 70 feet climb and work from ladders while following all safety protocols.

Walk long distances and remain in a standing position for extended periods.

Ability to work primarily in a standing position.

Lifting up to 75 pounds.

Ability to stand walk twist bend balance reach and engage in repetitive motion for extended periods of time.

Ability to kneel and stoop frequently.

Ability to crouch crawl squat and sit occasionally.

Ability to lift push and pull up to 100 pounds frequently pushing carts up to 100 pounds frequently and up to 200 occasionally.

Ability to communicate effectively using two-way radio.

Ability to speak read and write in English to write reports parts orders or notes legibly for others comprehend equipment instructions (fine print) work order request emails mobile device alarms work schedules energy reports.

Ability to operate power tools and mechanical instrumentation safely.

Ability to work safely in low light areas read fine print on mechanical parts communicate and respond in noisy mechanical rooms.

KSAs Other Skills

Minimum of three years experience in facility engineer work.

Preferred but not required State of MN Special Class Boilers License

Preferred but not required Universal Refrigerant Reclaim Certification

Must be able to work various shifts days afternoons weekdays and weekends to cover shifts when needed.
