1st Class Drydock Worker Purpose: As a Drydock Worker at Colonnas Shipyard Inc. you will perform duties in all docking operations and waterfront activities at Colonnas Shipyard to include the dry docks Marine Travelift facility and Marine Railway.
The position is located onsite in Norfolk VA and will often require hours beyond a standard work week with flexible schedule availability to include evenings/weekends/holidays to support production/operations. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Key responsibilities with nominal supervision include: - Lay out and set up equipment for docking operations for all dock facilities.
- Build blocks to height for docking operations independently.
- Perform line handling duties on all docking facilities during docking operations.
- Operate powered industrial equipment such as forklifts/MEWP/telehandler during dock shop operations.
- Perform mooring operations for vessels in accordance with requirements.
- Guide Marine Travelift on and off piers as well as grade beams.
- Pull straps and lead reconfiguration on Marine Travelift.
- Perform track watch duties on Marine Railway.
- Perform basic table saw and bandsaw operations as well as chainsaw operations and maintenance.
- Perform intermediate small boat operations.
- Gather and deliver tools materials and equipment to work site/shop.
- Lead small group to complete tasks with minimal supervision.
Additionally position will: - Maintain cleanliness and organization of docking facilities shop and tools.
- Perform maintenance tasks (to include physical labor activities pressure washing painting etc.) of docking facilities and waterfront assets such as oil booms and work floats.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: - Must have at least 5 years of shipyard experience in a dock shop or related maritime trade.
- Knowledge of and ability to use hand and power tools associated with trade.
- Must be willing to lead and instruct lower classmen on various tasks.
- Must be able to stand and remain at assigned worksite for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to work and communicate effectively with others.
- Must be able to comprehend and follow complex instructions.
Preferred Qualifications - Ability to operate Marine Railway.
- Ability to operate Marine Travelift.
Security Requirements: - U.S. Citizenship Required.
Travel Requirements: - Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements: - Must be able to lift carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job but no less than 20 lbs.
- Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders work in extreme temperature environments aboard ships in shipyards under industrial conditions and in confined spaces including enter and moving through manholes.
- May ride ships at sea for extended periods
- Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat humidity noise and dirty conditions working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
- Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
- Employee is required to operate trucks forklifts & man-lifts.
- While performing the duties of this job you may frequently be required to stand walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and required to reach with hands and arms climb and balance stoop squat kneel twist and crawl.
- Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
- Frequent use of respirator.
- Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding cutting or working with molten metal.
