Sr. Design Technician Electric Distribution

This position is ideal for an experienced technician who enjoys hands-on field work developing utility design solutions and mentoring junior team members. This is a non-Engineer fielding and design role requiring periodic travel to client sites to gather pole data inspect infrastructure and ensure design accuracy.

What Youll Do

• Perform field visits to collect data on utility poles and electrical infrastructure ensuring accuracy for design packages.
• Design overhead and underground electric distribution systems preparing construction drawings bills of materials and documentation.
• Provide calculations such as pole loading voltage drop easement validation permitting requirements and cost estimating.
• Conduct pole analysis modeling develop materials lists perform GIS reviews and prepare or update design prints.
• Support pre-construction activities and answer design and site-related questions.
• Review client records GIS data and field information to identify conflicts verify accuracy and incorporate updates.
• Lead junior technicians through data collection drafting and utility design standards.
• Manage multiple projects while meeting quality schedule and client expectations.
• Apply company safety rules client standards and regulatory requirements (RUS NESC permitting).
• Collaborate with engineers designers and construction crews participating in walkdowns and coordination meetings.
• Work independently with strong communication and documentation practices.

What Were Looking For

• 25 years of experience in a design technician engineering technician or utility design role.
• Familiarity with electric distribution systems (overhead and underground).
• Proficiency with AutoCAD MicroStation or similar drafting/design software.
• Ability to interpret construction drawings specifications and utility standards.
• Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office.
• Reliable vehicle and willingness to travel regularly for fielding assignments (mileage reimbursed).

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in gas and/or electric distribution design.
• Experience with DDS design software tools.
• Knowledge of GIS systems such as SmallWorld or Bentley Utility Designer.
• Associate degree or advanced technical degree in a related field.
• Experience mentoring junior technicians.
• Strong attention to detail quality and safety practices.
