GENERAL DESCRIPTION:


The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking a Large Carnivore Biologist to support the management of large carnivore populations with an emphasis on humanwildlife conflict management in the Pinedale Wyoming area. This position involves field-based work using capture equipment controlled pharmaceuticals firearms and a variety of specialized field tools to safely and effectively manage large carnivores while supporting conservation and public safety objectives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed in the job level.


  • Working long and irregular hours (on-call 24/7) in response to varied large carnivore conflict calls.
  • Working both independently and as part of a small team in remote and rugged areas to accomplish goals regarding large carnivore management.
  • Objectively investigating reported incidents of livestock damage to determine and document the cause of death.
  • Preventing human-carnivore conflicts by working with businesses agencies outfitters property owners livestock producers and the public.
  • Capturing and handling black bears grizzly bears mountain lions and gray wolves.
  • Repairing and maintaining equipment including trailers culvert traps other specialty trap gear chainsaws and winches.
  • Collecting detailed data and keeping accurate records regarding large carnivore conflicts and management.
  • Entering data in Microsoft Excel Microsoft Access and Google Sheets.
  • Using radio telemetry equipment for locating marked animals.
  • Using controlled drugs firearms and knives.
  • Assisting with information and education programs.
  • Investigate incidents of human injury caused by wildlife.
  • Assisting law enforcement personnel with investigations of wildlife violations.

Qualifications



PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:


Preference will be given for any combination of training and experience equivalent to a bachelors degree in wildlife management range management biology zoology ichthyology or closely related field

Preference will be given for experience in capturing and handling black bears grizzly bears mountain lions and gray wolves.

**Must have a valid drivers license.



KNOWLEDGE:


  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude and enthusiasm while working long and irregular hours under adverse conditions and extreme public scrutiny (position is on-call 24/7).
  • The position will require heavy lifting (> 70 lbs.) and excellent physical condition.
  • Skills will be required in safely using firearms controlled pharmaceuticals capture equipment ATVs UTVs horses 4-wheel drive vehicles radio equipment radio telemetry and power equipment and tools.
  • The position requires work with dangerous animals in remote settings. Sound judgment is required.
  • Proficiency in collecting recording and accurately entering data is required.
  • Will require independent decision-making ability and self-sufficiency as well as excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of the ecology of large carnivores and other wild animals.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Operating 4-wheel drive vehicles ATVs UTVs hiking long distances over rough terrain using sledge hammers shovels and other hand tools and potentially riding and packing horses in backcountry situations.
  • Working long and irregular hours. On-call 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
  • The position will require very heavy lifting and excellent physical condition.
  • Working in inclement and severe weather conditions.
  • Working independently in bear country/backcountry locations when necessary.

  • Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check prior to appointment.
