About the role

In F-Secure Foundational Protection Services we ensure that our products and services can handle evolving threats in every digital moment particularly against scams through building rules and detections training or developing new machine learning models and guiding various development teams in delivering needed functionalities. We are seeking an experienced Scam Threat Researcher who understands the scam ecosystem enough across the Scam Kill Chain. You will be instrumental in developing defensive protections that keep our users safe from increasingly sophisticated scam operations.

You will become part of a global team consisting of researchers threat intelligence and data science experts while based in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. Additionally you have the option to work in a hybrid mode provided that you are already residing within Malaysia. Due to current restrictions imposed by the Government of Malaysia we are unable to offer relocation support for this role.

At F-Secure we want to be efficient and transparent in our recruiting. Our hiring process will consist of three interview rounds: introduction interview team interview and final interview. Our aim is to move quickly through the steps and inform each candidate on a timely manner whether they will proceed in the process.

Key responsibilities:

As a Scam Threat Researcher you will bepart of the Team that ensures our products protect users from the most sophisticated scams.

In order to do that youll be focusing on:

• Scam Research - Identify and analyze latest consumer-facing scam threats especially within Asia across various channels (email websites social media mobile apps etc.) including staying updated on how emerging technologies like (Agentic and Generative) AI are being used in scams. You will be quick to capitalize on emerging tech trend to explore how they can pose potential threats to consumer.
• Scam Intelligence Collection Together with Threat Intelligence team gather and analyze data from diverse sources including internal telemetry commercial feeds and OSINT.
• Scam Protection Development - Design and implement detection and/or protection against identified scam vectors by utilizing existing systems technologies and tools.
• Actionable Insights - Develop methodologies to detect and classify new scam variants in the wild by updating the F-Secure Scam Kill Chain. Occasionally share research findings through blog presentation and/or demo.
• Collaboration - Identify protection gaps and collaborate with engineering team in developing scam protection features.
• Quality Measurement - Perform regular monitoring assessment and measurement of our current scam protection capabilities.

What are we looking for

• Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in mobile threats research or scam investigations.
• Experience with big data analysis methods and visualization tools.
• Familiarity with mobile Operating System internals app ecosystem and app interoperability.
• Comfortable coding in Python and Java with some experience using software deployment tools and the flexibility to learn new languages.
• Proficient communication skills (in English) with the ability to document findings present insights effectively and coach & share knowledge with team members.
• Growth-oriented and a collaborative team player with a proactive approach and strong critical thinking skills.
• A research mindset able to work in open domains and independently find ways to navigate uncertainties or unknowns.

Bonus points:

• Strong understanding of mobile security threats particularly in the Android ecosystem including an in-depth knowledge of scam tactics and techniques.

• Knowledge of social engineering techniques and social psychology.

• Experience with machine learning approaches to scam threat detection.
