The Department of Civil Engineering typically has 200-250 undergraduate 50-70 graduate students and 15 faculty members 3 technical staff one machinist and three administrative staff. Graduate degrees offered are MEng MScE and PhD.

YOUR FOCUS


Reporting to the Civil Engineering Chief Technician the Engineering Technologist is responsible for the safe operation maintenance and training of complex scientific and heavy equipment in a variety of Civil Engineering Laboratories with minimal supervision.

  • Supervise and help conduct undergraduate teaching laboratories throughout the undergraduate academic terms.
  • Research new related equipment and techniques to elevate the student experience for related undergraduate laboratory experiences.
  • Supervise and assist with Graduate level course development and laboratory/research projects. Off-site work might occasionally be required
  • Assist with the development/design of research projects and custom equipment within the designated laboratories.
  • This position serves as the Departmental Radiation Safety Officer.
  • Train users on specialized equipment for safety quality and efficiency of operation using in house Safe Operating Procedures.
  • Develop Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs) within the Civil Engineering laboratories and equipment.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Technician to develop SOPs to achieve a cohesive safety standard.
  • Work with the Chief Technician to develop Lockout procedures to ensure any kinetic or potential energy sources have been disabled while equipment is being repaired or maintained.
  • Participate in safety audits of various laboratories

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Post Secondary diploma with a discipline in Civil or Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Three to five (3-5) years of experience conducting standardized Geotechnical and/or Material Science testing in a laboratory setting.

Additional Strengths

  • Certified Professional Technologist () or Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) by the New Brunswick Society of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (NBSCETT).
  • WHIMIS TDG First Aid and CPR Fall Arrest Rigging Training are considered assets.
  • Knowledge and use of testing equipment for Civil Engineering applications. Such as Tri-Axial Cells Compression and Tension test frames direct shear test apparatus programming of data logging equipment and both Pneumatic and Hydraulic testing frames and rams are considered strong assets.
  • Knowledge of Lockout Tag procedures is considered a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of light metal machining and carpentry-related disciplines to be able to design and fabricate is a strong asset
  • Ability to give detailed specifications of complex components to a Machinist for specialized fabrication of custom equipment for repair of replacement parts.
  • Experience with overhead cranes rigging knowledge with lifting loads with an overhead crane is considered a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of forklift operations loading and unloading equipment is considered an asset.
  • Self Motivated with ability to work well with others and independently as required.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Good time management skills is a requirement.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts in a positive inclusive manner is a requirement.
