Scope of Position:
The successful applicant will combine hands-on experience with scientific principles to provide technical support to engineers involved in testing research development and manufacturing of materials such as glass refractory ceramics metals and polymers. This position will focus on conducting analysis using optical methods and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) along with hands-on sample preparation in a laboratory environment.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
- Sample preparation of glass and refractory materials including cutting mounting epoxying grinding and polishing.
- Analyze and image prepared samples using optical methods including stereomicroscopy and polarized light microscopy.
- Conduct imaging and chemical analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX).
- Prepare reports and data compilation for Geologists and Engineering staff.
- Support maintenance of lab operations and supplies.
Travel Requirements
- Minimal - domestic and/or international travel may occasionally be required but would be the exception.
Work Schedule
- Generally 40 hrs. per week Mon-Fri but must be flexible.
- Overtime on-call and weekend work may be required at times to support test schedules.
Required Education & Experience
- AAS in Engineering Technology or related scientific field 2 years of experience in a technician role or similar function.
Required Skills
- Experience operating electron microscopes or microprobes. OR Experience performing other analytical (quantitative or semi-quantitative) chemistry techniques.
- Knowledge of safety systems and how they relate to machine work furnace work and material handling.
- Ability to gather information independently using established and defined procedures and collaborate to obtain input to solve more complex problems.
- Good written & oral communications skills.

AAS in Engineering Technology or related scientific field
2 years of experience in a technician role or similar role. Candidates must have experience conducting instrumental analysis with microscopes or microprobes.
