The leadership team recognises that the early years are a crucial period for emotional development and that behavioural needs are best addressed through consistency nurture and strong relationships. As part of the schools ongoing investment in pastoral support they are seeking a dedicated Behaviour Mentor to work across Nursery Reception and Key Stage 1.
The Behaviour Mentor will support pupils who experience difficulties with emotional regulation behaviour management social interaction or engagement with learning. Children supported in this role may present with SEMH needs ASD ADHD attachment-related difficulties or delayed emotional development.
You will work as a consistent and trusted adult supporting pupils both in and out of the classroom. Through positive reinforcement structured routines and nurturing relationships you will help children develop emotional awareness self-regulation skills and confidence within the school environment.
Provide targeted 1:1 behavioural and emotional support
Deliver small group interventions focusing on emotional literacy
Support children within Nursery and classroom settings
Assist pupils during transitions and changes in routine
Support behaviour during playtimes and lunchtimes
Implement individual behaviour support plans consistently
Use play-based restorative and trauma-informed approaches
Work closely with class teachers EYFS staff and the SENCO
Observe assess and track pupil behaviour and progress
Maintain detailed records and contribute to review meetings
Build strong trusting relationships with parents and carers
Support safeguarding and child protection procedures
The successful candidate will be calm empathetic and emotionally resilient with a strong commitment to supporting young children. You should understand that behaviour is a form of communication and be confident responding to challenging situations with patience and consistency.
You should demonstrate:
Experience in a Primary Nursery or EYFS setting
Knowledge of SEND SEMH and early childhood development
A nurturing and consistent approach to behaviour support
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Emotional resilience and adaptability
Relevant qualifications in childcare education psychology youth work or mental health are desirable but not essential.
