DESCRIPTION
Carbondale Fire District is accepting applications for Seasonal Employees to support summer wildland initial attack patrols all-hazard response operations special event staffing Federal and State wildland fire assignments and mitigation efforts. Primary duties focus on wildland initial attack patrols with responsibilities assigned based on the employees level of certification training and experience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & CERTIFICATIONS
- 18 years of age
- Valid Colorado Drivers License
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- NWCG S130/190 and L-280 Basic Wildland Firefighter Certified by May 22 2026
- Successful completion of the NWCG Arduous Pack Test by May 22 2026
- ICS 100 and NIMS 700/800 certifications by May 22 2026
- Successful completion of Carbondale Fires Seasonal Staffing Academy (May 2026; dates TBD)
- American Heart Association BLS CPR for Healthcare Providers by May 22 2026
- Applicants must be able to perform all essential job functions as outlined in the job description
- Must currently reside within a 75-mile radius of Carbondale Colorado
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Colorado Structural Firefighter I with Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations
- Colorado EMT-Basic Certification
- NWCG Wildland FF Type 1
- NWCG Engine Boss
EMPLOYMENT TYPE
- Temporary Employee FLSA Non-exempt
SCHEDULE
- Flexible schedule with positions beginning May 22 2026 and ending September 7 2026. Start and end dates may vary based on local wildfire conditions. The typical daily schedule is with the possibility of extended workdays depending on operational needs. Employees must be available for a minimum of one 8½-hour shift per week.
- Schedule for Federal or State wildfire assignments may include workdays of up to 16 hours for assignments lasting up to 18 days.
COMPENSATION
- Hourly pay ranges from $20 to $35 depending on qualifications and experience with no additional benefits beyond those required by law.
- Additional hourly compensation of $2$4 per hour is provided for Federal and State wildfire assignments based on qualifications and experience. These assignments typically involve 16-hour workdays for up to 18 days and often result in significant overtime.
- No benefits are provided beyond those required by law.
SELECTION PROCESS
- Application deadline: February 25 2026 at 1600 hours.
- Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and whose applications are accepted may be invited to an interview during the first two weeks of March. Specific dates and times will be determined.
- Conditional job offers will be issued by March 23 2026 and are contingent upon successful completion of a physical examination with a physician designated by Carbondale Fire as well as passing the NWCG arduous work capacity test.

Seasonal Staffing Program - Seasonal Employee Job Description
Purpose of Position:
Under the direction of assigned supervisory personnel the Seasonal Employee performs a variety of operational support and maintenance functions in support of Carbondale Fires wildland and all-hazards mission. This position primarily supports wildland initial attack patrols all-hazard response operations special event staffing and wildfire mitigation activities. This position may assist with emergency response prevention and public education efforts based on the employees level of certification and experience. Duties are performed in accordance with established policies procedures and safety standards with an emphasis on operational readiness risk reduction and effective service delivery.
Key Responsibilities & Essential Job Functions for All Seasonal Employees:
- Performs functional and administrative duties in providing wildland firefighting rescue firefighting EMS response and other emergency responses.
- Respond to wildland fires as part of a crew assisting with fire suppression containment and mop-up operations.
- Conduct wildland initial attack patrols during the summer months.
- Conduct wildfire risk assessments and compile detailed reports of the findings.
- Maintain and repair firefighting equipment and vehicles to ensure readiness.
- Support Carbondale Fires Prevention Division with public education including station tours and distributing fire safety materials.
- Perform fuel reduction tasks including but not limited to thinning vegetation clearing brush creating firebreaks and chipping branches.
- Works under the direct supervision of the Shift Lieutenant or other superior officer as may be designated.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support Carbondale Fires organizational objectives.
Additional Duties for Seasonal Employees who are EMT-Basics:
- Assist with providing pre-hospital emergency medical care including patient assessment basic life support (BLS) and transport. Duties include administering CPR controlling bleeding splinting fractures managing airways and assisting with medical emergencies.
Additional Duties for Seasonal Employees with Structure Fire Certification:
- Respond to fires rescues and other emergencies to protect life and property. Duties include fire suppression search and rescue ventilation hazard mitigation and providing medical aid.

The Seasonal Employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and humid conditions fumes or airborne particles toxic or caustic chemicals risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in office settings and loud at an emergency scene.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervision is not a normal responsibility of the position. May provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel on district policies and practices.
