JOB TITLE: Literacy & Instructional Support Specialist (LISS)

REPORTS TO: Building Administrator

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

The Literacy & Instructional Support Specialist (LISS) serves a dual role that supports both student learning and teacher instructional growth. This position combines the responsibilities of the Building Instructional Coach and the Reading Specialist to maximize impact in the areas of literacy instruction intervention and professional learning.

The LISS provides targeted reading instruction to students with identified needs while also coaching teachers in evidence-based instructional practices supporting PLC and MTSS structures and helping strengthen Tier 1 instruction in all subject areas across the building. This is a teacher-contract position with 10 additional days and is not a supervisory or evaluative role.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Building

Instructional Capacity

  • Develop and enhance staff knowledge of evidence-based instructional practices across all subject areas including modeling dialogical coaching co-teaching and providing feedback.
  • Participate in professional collaboration within grade-level PLCs to support data-driven decision making curriculum implementation and alignment with Indiana Academic Standards.

Planning & Professional Learning

  • Deliver ongoing professional learning opportunities based on building needs student data and district initiatives.
  • Assist with high-quality instructional design including lesson planning curricular alignment and integration of literacy strategies across content areas.
  • Support implementation of the districts adopted reading curriculum and ensure strong alignment to the Science of Reading.
  • Assist in organizing interpreting and disseminating data to teachers PLCs and leadership teams.

Student Support

  • Provide targeted small-group reading intervention for students with the greatest needs based on MTSS and RTI data.
  • Assess and progress monitor within assigned small-group students reading development and share progress with teachers administrators and families.
  • Co-plan co-assess and co-teach with classroom teachers to address specific literacy needs within the classroom environment.
  • Support literacy-based goal setting with students and contribute to MTSS documentation.

MTSS RTI & Data Support Systems

  • Serve as a key member of the building MTSS and RTI teams.
  • Help establish consistent data routines and support teachers with universal screening diagnostic assessments and progress monitoring.
  • Assist PLCs with analyzing student performance trends and adjusting core instruction and interventions accordingly.
  • Collaboratively develop intervention plans and ensure a smooth flow of communication among staff students and families.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS REQUIRED

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelors degree with Literacy Endorsement required.
  • Masters degree in education reading or related field preferred.

Knowledge & Skills Required

  • Strong knowledge of the five components of reading and effective instructional strategies.
  • Demonstrated expertise in evidence-based instructional practices and dialogical coaching.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data to drive instruction.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Deep knowledge of Indiana Academic Standards.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to lead professional learning without evaluative authority.
  • Technological proficiency to support instructional design data use and digital tools.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years teaching experience required.
  • Demonstrated teacher-leadership experience such as PLC leadership mentoring coaching or leading professional development.
  • Experience providing reading intervention or literacy support preferred.

Daily Work Allocation (Protects both roles):

  • 60-70% Direct Student Service
    (Pull-out/intervention progress monitoring assessments)
  • 20-30% Teacher Support / Coaching
    (Coaching cycles modeling PLCs lesson design support)
  • 10% Coordination & Systems Work
    (MTSS data meetings planning communication)

Additional Note: Teacher Contract 10 additional days 193 days per school year
