Job Summary:
The purpose of this job is to coordinate one or more custodians at assigned school and participate in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings grounds and equipment; assign direct and inspect work of custodial employees.
Essential Duties
- Coordinates assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
- Ensures adequate preparation and custodial staffing for special events.
- Makes daily inspections of buildings and grounds; instructs and supervises custodians in cleaning of buildings waste/recycling collection and disposal and policing of grounds.
- Assists in instruction and training of custodians in proper use and care of cleaning machines chemicals and equipment.
- Keeps buildings and premises including sidewalks driveways steps parking and play areas safe neat and clean at all times.
- Reports issues related to heat ventilation and air conditioning systems and reports other building maintenance related items. Inspects buildings during storms or other inclement weather events based upon established procedures.
- Ensures that doors and windows are secure when buildings are unoccupied. Checks or assigns daily inspections of all exit doors and ensures that panic bars and lock mechanisms are working properly.
- Ensures that classrooms are swept and wastebaskets emptied daily. Ensures that classroom surfaces including desks and countertops are cleaned daily.
- Ensures that corridors and water fountains are cleaned after school each day and during the day as required.
- Ensures that restrooms (including toilets urinals sinks walls and floors) are cleaned with disinfectant daily.
- Ensures that walls doors and furniture are cleaned or dusted weekly or more often if needed.
- Ensures that all accessible windows are cleaned on both the inside and outside yearly .
- Keeps the grounds free from litter.
- Performs groundskeeping tasks such as grass cutting and tree trimming as necessary to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
- Keeps all floors in a clean and good condition. Operates floor scrubbers buffers and other equipment as required. Coordinates the stripping and waxing of floors as needed during Summer breaks.
- Reports major repairs needed promptly to the principal/department head.
- Remains on the school premises during scheduled work hours unless approved by the principal.
- Coordinates responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining before leaving the premises that all doors and windows are secured and all lights except those left on for safety reasons are turned off.
- Keeps an inventory of supplies equipment and fuel levels. Requests supplies from the Environmental Services Coordinator far enough in advance so that materials may be delivered in a timely fashion.
- Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal.
- Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash rubbish and waste.
- Responsible for summer cleaning each year as assigned. May include cleaning of light fixtures walls windows floor refinishing and carpet cleaning.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Education and Experience Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED equivalent and two (2) years of janitorial or maintenance experience.
Must possess and maintain a valid state drivers license with an acceptable driving history.
