The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Additionally the Department of Justice includes the North Carolina State Crime Lab the North Carolina Justice Academy and the Sheriffs and Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions.

Description of Work

Recruitment Range: $73208 - $75822

The Attorney I provides litigation services legal analysis and strategic advice to DAC leadership supporting complex legal matters and ensuring compliance with applicable laws.

Key Duties:

Represent DAC in civil litigation in state and federal courts including appeals.

Develop and execute legal strategies for cases of varying complexity.

Draft pleadings motions discovery requests/responses and settlement agreements.

Conduct discovery depositions and persuasive arguments before judges and juries.

Perform legal research and analyze statutes case law and regulations.

Investigate case facts review evidence and interview witnesses.

Provide legal advice and written opinions to DAC leadership.

Assist with drafting and analyzing legislation impacting DAC operations.

Prepare appellate briefs and conduct oral arguments in appellate courts.

Respond to inquiries from citizens officials and legislators.

Attend public hearings and client meetings as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

1. Interest or experience in federal court litigation.

2. Litigation experience or strong interest in learning litigation.

3. Excellent research writing and communication skills.

4. Ability to manage litigation and deadlines and work collaboratively in a team environment.

Minimum Education and Experience

Licensed to practice law by the North Carolina State Bar.
