Job Summary

Minimum Qualifications

  • The ESSA guidelines require that paraprofessionals (educational assistants) who provide instructional services must have fulfilled one of the following to meet the highly qualified requirements
    • Obtained an associates or higher degree; or
    • Completed two years of study at an institution of higher education; or
    • Successful completion of the ETS Praxis ParaPro Assessment Tennessee
  • Two years experience working with children
  • Strong verbal presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable

Goal: To assist students and teachers meet stated educational goals.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist students teachers and others as directed with behavioral challenges
  • Assisting students with behavioral strategies to teach desired behaviors
  • Data collection fidelity checks support and training of behavioral strategies help prepare materials and resources for student support and behavior strategies for Tier 1 2 and 3 interventions support students with behavioral challenges in the inclusive settings handle crisis situations by using de-escalation techniques pre-crisis and physical intervention to ensure the safety of students and staff
  • Help students develop appropriate behaviors improve social skills independence achieve academic goals and provide teacher support in the general and special education classrooms
  • Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills assemblies play periods and field trips
  • Check notebooks supervise testing and makeup work as assigned
  • Work with small groups of students to reinforce behavior strategies and skills
  • Know and follow all safety rules and procedures associated with the responsibilities of the position
  • Establish and maintain satisfactory respectful working relationships within the school environment
  • Successfully participates in required training
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent behavior interventionist supervising teacher and/or school principal

  • This job assists in supervising students

While performing the duties of this job the employee is

  • regularly required to talk or hear

  • Ability to lift and carry loads up to 50 pounds

The teacher assistant for special education works 7 hours per day (35 hours per week-ten (10) -month work year) with salary established by the Board of Education. Performance of this job will be evaluated according to procedures established by the Human Resources Department.

Reports to: AMS & AHS Principal

Salary range:$19.38 - $21.40 hourly rate without degree/$24.35 - $26.89 hourly rate with 4 year degree 7 hours per day pending previous and like experience.
