Job Summary

The Food Safety Manager - Regulatory on the Upstream Food Safety Controls Team is responsible for ensuring all private brand products meet safety criteria and regulatory requirements. They work across PB teams (culinary marketing PMs etc.) to ensure new product labels and labeling materials are approved prior to first production and existing products maintain approval or are flagged for enforcement action.

Key job responsibilities
- Provide business enablement support and Food Safety/Regulatory subject matter expertise through claims label and marketing material reviews and approvals for new product development and change management with adherence to agreed-upon SLAs tracking E2E progress through business tools (PLM smartsheet etc.)
- Provide clear well-researched risk assessments FS/Reg POVs and recommendations for business proactively (high risk product categories novel claims new business models etc.) and reactively (investigation support discovered errors etc.)
- Proactively identify existing process gaps; establish mechanisms where needed and provide inputs and support to close gaps to mitigate risk and increase efficiency
- Author/contribute to monthly and quarterly reporting including accurate metrics/data tracking against targets and program progress against goals
- Provide technical expertise and support for developing claim substantiation and risk assessment frameworks through deep understanding of regulations at a federal and state level working with Legal to understand dynamic litigation landscape
- Provide coverage support as needed for team; share knowledge gained from investigations process failures conferences etc.
- Communicate with cross-functional teams to ensure appropriate alignment approval and adoption of new processes and requirements
- Provide subject matter expertise to influence Product Control policy standards program and tech roadmap
- Author/update SOPs and training guides as needed


About the team
The North America Upstream Food Safety Controls team provides food safety and regulatory expertise to design commercialize and maintain Amazon branded food products including pet food and dietary supplements. Our programs identify and manage food safety and compliance risk end-to-end from site selection to ASIN approval and post-sales monitoring. The team is comprised of sub-programs that cover product-level food safety and regulatory compliance supplier-level food safety and compliance and food contact packaging compliance. The team works closely with and supports incidents and escalations and process improvements and automation through operations excellence.

- 4 years of compliance program management legal governance audit risk/loss prevention or equivalent experience
- 3 years of managing food safety and quality in a large-scale retail or manufacturing environment experience
- Bachelors degree in Food Science or related field
- Knowledge of retail food code and regulations governing grocery retail at local state and federal levels
- Experience handling confidential information
- Experience interacting with local food safety regulators
- Experience working effectively across cross-functional teams and partnering well with people at all levels within an organization
- Experience in written and oral communication including the ability to communicate with all levels in the organization (technical business executive)
- Bachelors Degree in Food Science Nutrition Operations Microbiology or related field
- 3 years of experience in food manufacturing and/or corporate food industry
- Experience with regulatory requirements (FDA and USDA regulations etc.) where to find them and how to read/interpret (Preferred: knowledge and experience with pet food/supplements dietary supplements and baby/infant formula labeling regulations)

- 3 years of program requirements definition and data and metrics leveraging to drive improvements experience
- Professional auditing qualification or similar risk or compliance credentials
- Experience with SQL and Excel
- Experience handling ambiguous or undefined challenges through strong problem solving abilities
- Experience dealing well with ambiguity prioritizing needs and delivering measurable results in an agile environment
- Experience managing projects and working independently
- Experience prioritizing and handling multiple assignments at any given time while maintaining commitment to deadlines or experience handling confidential information and maintaining professionalism in dealing with senior executives
- 3 years of defining and implementing process improvement initiatives using data and metrics experience
- Experience in writing and editing with a strong command of grammar punctuation and style

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $66800/year in our lowest geographic market up to $142800/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge skills and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered equity sign-on payments and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package in addition to a full range of medical financial and/or other benefits.
