THIS RECRUITMENT IS TO FILL ONE FULL-TIME VACANCY IN THE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT - BUILDING & SAFETY DIVISIONAND TO ESTABLISH AN ELIGIBILITY LIST TO BE USED FOR FUTURE VACANCIES.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:The Building Inspector is a technical field inspection classification in the Citys Community Development Department. It is distinguished from other classes by the responsibility to perform combination building inspections and enforce applicable building codes ordinances and regulations. The incumbent is expected to perform assigned duties with a high degree of independence applying knowledge of construction practices codes and City policies gained through training and experience.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXCERCISED:Receives general supervision from the Building Official. No supervision is exercised.
SUMMARY:Under general supervision performs a variety of combination field inspection duties related to new construction remodeling and repair projects to ensure compliance with applicable local state and national building codes City ordinances policies and regulations. Reviews plans issues permits responds to public inquiries prepares reports maintains inspection records and performs related duties as required.

- Inspects materials and methods used in new construction remodeling and repair work during various stages of construction to ensure compliance with approved plans applicable codes and regulations.
- Interprets and enforces applicable local state and national building codes and regulations; orders corrective action when work is found to be in violation of standards.
- Reviews building permit applications and construction plans for conformance with applicable codes and requirements; issues building permits as authorized.
- Conducts field inspections of work sites to verify compliance with approved permits and applicable regulations.
- Responds to complaints and requests for information from the public; provides information and prepares correspondence as necessary.
- Prepares reports related to fire damage unsafe structures and non-conforming conditions.
- Prepares routine maps and drawings of sewer and water connections and service lines for permanent records.
- Issues notices certificates stop-work orders and related documentation as required.
- Maintains accurate records of field inspections and final inspections.
- Inspects suspected unsafe or defective construction and recommends appropriate corrective action.
- Supports the relationship between the City of Baldwin Park and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF
- Methods practices materials equipment and safety hazards associated with building construction remodeling and repair.
- Applicable local state and national building codes and regulations.
- Common defects and faults in construction.
ABILITY TO
- Detect and locate defective construction and determine the stage of construction when defects may be most easily identified and corrected.
- Enforce codes and regulations with firmness tact and impartiality.
- Read understand and interpret construction plans and specifications.
- Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors City staff and the general public.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the knowledge skills and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
- High school graduation or GED equivalent and
- Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in building construction remodeling and addition work; and
- Possession of an ICC Certification as a Building Inspector.
- Must possess a valid Class C California drivers license and maintain a satisfactory driving record during the course of employment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess the ability to occasionally bend stoop kneel reach push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information.
- Must possess the knowledge and skills to ascend and descend ladders in a safe manner.
- Ability to lift carry push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
