Level I: $1716.53 - $2051.41 Biweekly
Level II: $1954.20 - $2335.45 Biweekly
Examination:
Written (Weight 100%): Will be conducted for the purpose of assessing the applicants knowledge of principles of internal combustion engines and of procedures tools equipment and materials used in the repair maintenance and servicing of motorized equipment; diagnose the cause of mechanical failures; diagnose and repair fuel injection systems transaxles and interpret on-board computer fault codes; install and adjust various emission control devices; ability to estimate time and material needed in order to complete a job; read comprehend and follow electrical and mechanical schematics understand and follow oral and written instructions; and to operate computers and related software applications and other related topics.
Applicants must attain at least 70 % score on each phase of the examination process.
Minimum Qualifications / Employment Standards:
Level I:
High School Diploma G.E.D. or equivalent AND two (2) years of experience repairing late model vehicles which incorporate front wheel drive fuel injection systems command control computer systems and transaxles;
OR
Completion of an approved two (2) year automotive technology program.
Possession of a valid Class C California Drivers License prior to the time of appointment is required.
Level II:
High School Diploma G.E.D. or equivalentANDfive (5) years of experience repairing late model vehicles which incorporate front wheel drive fuel injection systems command control computer systems and transaxles;
ORthree (3) years as an Automotive Mechanic I in the Kern County system or equivalent; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
The following five (5) ASE certifications are required: Engine Repair Engine Performance Electrical Systems Heating and Air Conditioning Brakes
Possession of a valid Class B California Drivers License by end of six-month probation is required.
Both Levels:
Appointees are required to furnish their own hand tools in accordance with departmental policy.

Following an offer of employment you may be required to submit to post offer medical and drug screening tests at County expense.
This examination will establish an eligible list from which an immediate appointment will be made at the Kern County Sheriffs Office. Other permanent and temporary appointments will be made as needed.
Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for a period of twelve-months unless specified otherwise by the Civil Service Commission.
