Description

The Team
The Ministry of Attorney General (AG) is responsible for ensuring that the administration of public affairs is carried out in accordance with all applicable laws in British Columbia. The Legal Services Branch (LSB) supports the AG in fulfilling this mandate by among other things representing and advising the provincial government in civil law matters. LSBs clients include government ministries and public agencies.

The Role
The primary responsibility of counsel in this position will be to represent and advise LSB clients in response to human rights employment and labour relations claims before the BC Human Rights Tribunal (HRT) and labour addition counsel in this position from time to time may represent and advise LSB clients in response to employment related civil claims petitions for judicial review of HRT decisions and matters before the Labour Relations Board.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Must be a member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia or be immediately eligible for membership;
  • Minimum 6 years of call to the Bar in a Canadian jurisdiction at the date of applying for the position. Only applicants in their 6th to 11th year of call will be considered (2016-2021).
  • Recent experience as a lawyer working in human rights (under the BC Human Rights Code or equivalent statute in a Canadian jurisdiction) labour law (under the BC Labour Relations Code or equivalent statute in another Canadian jurisdiction) and/or employment law in BC or another Canadian jurisdiction; and
  • Litigation experience representing clients before the HRT labour arbitrators or the court in human rights labour and/or employment related proceedings.

Preference may be given to applicants with:

  • More years of experience than the minimum job requirements listed above;
  • Experience representing clients in wrongful dismissal civil claims;
  • Experience representing clients in petitions for judicial review;
  • Experience litigating for government and/or government-related entities or persons in a Canadian jurisdiction.
