Job Summary

  • Previous experience applying the City of Edmonton Design and Construction Standards and Specifications to civil engineering construction methodologies.

Skills required for success:

  • Expertise in civil engineering construction methodologies and the ability to apply this knowledge to real-world situations
  • Interprets complex plans and specifications and evaluates construction quality in the field
  • Effective negotiation and conflict resolution when working with consultants contractors and developers to ensure projects meet City standards and quality expectations
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships with all external and internal collaborators and interested and/or affected parties
  • Exceptional organization and multitasking manage multiple concurrent construction projects effectively including coordinating inspection schedules
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to interpret complex designs and develop solutions for unforeseen field conditions or design discrepancies
  • Sound judgment and independent decision-making when assessing asset transfer recommendations often with limited direct supervision
  • Effective oral and written communication to convey technical information and maintain productive working relationships

Conditions of Employment:

  • Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 drivers license (or provincial equivalent) or higher. Candidates will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the candidate to obtain business-use auto insurance
  • Compliance with the City of Edmontons safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as wearing steel-toe boots gloves goggles sunscreen and coveralls

Work Environment:

  • The work is primarily based outdoors in conditions including extreme temperatures precipitation dust dirt and excessive noise
  • This position requires you to be on-site and in the field often working around heavy equipment (loader grader dump truck etc.)
  • This position involves public interactions and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs expectations and emotional states
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance
  • Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52.

Edmonton rests in the heart of Treaty Six territory in Alberta and the homelands of the Metis Nation.

Join the Subdivision and Development Coordination Section within Urban Planning and Economy as a Seasonal Engineering Technologist I.

This highly independent role is crucial for safeguarding the Citys long-term infrastructure and financial interests. You will function as a Seasonal Transportation Inspector overseeing road construction to ensure quality control and strict adherence to design specifications and project compliance. You will apply extensive engineering knowledge across diverse moderate to very large-scope projects providing expert technical guidance to developers and collaborators. Success in this position relies on your sound judgment innovative thinking and ability to interpret complex designs in the field to mitigate future liabilities for the City of Edmonton.

What will you do:

  • Audit Construction and Quality Control of private land developer and utility projects ensuring all technical work and materials strictly comply with engineering requirements
  • Enforce the conditions set out in the Servicing Agreement between the developer and the City from a construction perspective
  • Act as the primary point of contact in the field for all construction-related issues and inquiries from internal City teams and external partners including contractors engineering consultants and private land developers
  • Complete Construction Completion Certificates (CCC) and Final Acceptance Certificates (FAC) Inspections including paved roads sidewalks curbing lighting systems and noise attenuation fencing
  • Review and accept documentation to verify that the project complies with City specifications providing technical input for final certificate approvals
  • Evaluate and recommend acceptance or rejection of asset transfers (e.g. roads utilities) from developers to the City based on risk liability and compliance with City standards
  • Make real-time field decisions concerning construction quality materials and adherence to approved plans such as approving concrete pours or verifying subgrade preparation
  • Provide support for process improvements and update engineering documents including Transportation Inspector Guidelines and City Design and Construction Standards
