Description of Work

This position will serve all 5 counties Cumberland County Columbus County Bladen County Harnett County and Robeson County Traffic Services Unit. Employees perform a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance repair and construction of roads and roadside features including installation of ground mounted signs and the use of paint and thermoplastic pavement markings. Other work duties include but is not limited to assisting with the paint crew when needed. Employees must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with crew members other departments and the public. Must be able to communicate effectively with various people and work in an outside environment including extreme heat and cold year-round.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC06 $34270 - $59973

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience in the installation of traffic control such as detours and lane closures
  • Experience in Intermediate Work Zone Safety and knowledge in Advance Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Practices
  • Experience with Changeable Message Signs (CMS) programming deploying and activating
  • Experience in record keeping such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used

Additional Expectations:

Ability to lead and assist in traffic operations crew work such as sign installation and incident management. Work in sign department includes but not limited to; layout and installation of regulatory warning and guide signs along roadways and fabrication of specialty signs. Work in the incident management program includes responding to an incident assessing the traffic situation and determining damages and resources necessary to clear the traffic problem and resume normal traffic flow. This position is subject to outside and inside environmental conditions extreme cold extreme heat noise vibration hazards and oils. Visual acuity is required. Either possession of a current Commercial Drivers License on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Class B Commercial Drivers License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear required.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience
