Who We Are:
Heritage Park is Canadas largest living history museum and offers visitors a chance to experience life in Western Canada from the 1860s to the early 1950s. The park features historical buildings costumed interpreters working antiques and various exhibits that provide insight into the regions past.
Job Overview:
In the role of a Railway Maintenance Engineer the individual serves as the primary point of contact for mechanical operations within the railroad. Their responsibilities include assigning tasks providing general feedback and overseeing day-to-day operations. They lead a team of mechanical specialists trained in welding machining and pipe fitting ensuring the completion of general inspections process monitoring and maintenance tasks in compliance with regulatory standards. Additionally they drive trains supervise track staff and oversee track inspections to maintain railway safety requirements.
Responsibilities:
Maintenance
- Oversee day-to-day operations ensuring the steam trains are maintained and kept in working condition
- Oversee direct reports including seasonal and casual staff assigning tasks monitoring work and providing feedback
- Provides feedback on day-to-day performance to Chief Engineer to support performance reviews
- Oversee track staff (track foreman machinist and steam mechanic) and supervise minor repairs
- Act as the point of contact for mechanical operations as a specialist providing guidance for troubleshooting issues
- Troubleshoot issues as they arise and ensures accurate record keeping in repair logs
- Facilitate job-related training and development for staff including new hire training job shadowing job rotation and skills training
- Provide basic training in welding machining and pipe fitting skills to other employees
- Conduct general inspections on a daily basis
- Monitor process operations particularly steam flowing
- Complete regular periodic comprehensive inspections and maintenance ensuring compliance with Alberta Transport and COR standards
- Operate trains as both a fireman and engineer as needed
- Hold a Track Inspection Level 2 certification as per Alberta Transportation Railway Safety Requirements
- Perform other duties as required

Required Qualifications:
- Completion of 4th Class Power Engineer certification is required
- A minimum of one (1) years of experience in a role that demonstrates skilled mechanical aptitude is required; diesel mechanic experience including familiarity with diesel engines is an asset
- A minimum of six (6) months of experience in a lead role/project lead role in a work or academic environment is required
- Minimum 6 months prior experience as a Locomotive Engineer or Fireman is preferred
- Commitment to continuous learning and development
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills in a client-faced setting
- All successful candidates (over the age of 18) will be required to go through a Police Information Check as a condition of employment.
Special Clothing and Equipment:
- Appropriate costuming and safety equipment will be provided by Heritage Park (if applicable)
- Maintenance of costumes and safety equipment is an employee responsibility
- Footwear as designated by the Heritage Park Costume Department will be provided by the employee
Special Working Conditions:
- The position will be exposed to weather extremes and will work both indoors and outdoors
- This position is physically demanding and the incumbent must have the ability to lift heavy items work in awkward positions in cramped spaces stand and move items for long periods of time and walk throughout the Park for extended periods
Hours of Work:
- The standard hours for this position are 40 hours per week
- The schedule will generally be five consecutive days per week (Monday to Friday)
- Occasional holiday evening and weekend work may be required
