Job Summary

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the Citys evolving criminal justice system participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards the smallest jail system possible without compromising public safety. The DOC is solely responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff visitors volunteer and people in custody inside our jails. Importantly safe jails enable DOC to providing people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with over 7500 diverse professionals and knowledge experts.

DOC seeks to recruit a Deputy Director of IMPACT (Interventions Making Profound and Continuous Transformations) assigned to the Counseling Services Unit. Under direction of the Assistant Commissioner of Counseling and the Director of Intervention and Special Population Services the Deputy Director will supervise Social Workers and other staff as assigned. The Deputy Director will support the implementation of restorative justice practices across all NYC DOC facilities but prioritizing this work in our emerging adult (1821-year-old) housing units and restrictive housing sites. The Deputy Director will support all specialized programming by developing implementing and managing programs associated with substance misuse programming and working directly with vendors and grant-funded employees. They will support the supervision of social workers and other team members pursuing licensure. They will manage reports and evaluate programming efforts to ensure programming meets the Departments expectations and to inform proposals for new program approaches.

Additional typical duties for this position include but are not limited to:
- Supervise team of Social Workers and other staff assigned to purview
- Coach guide and train staff assigned to purview
- Manage and oversee the implementation of contracted provider programming and
grant-funded programs
- Daily interaction with individuals in custody
- Oversight of the implementation of rehabilitative and behavioral modification programs and
services
- Oversight and enforcement of staff schedules creates plan for adequate coverage
- Monitor evaluate and help to develop curricula for group-based programming
- Evaluate and make recommendations regarding rehabilitation program
- Review reports of assigned staff
- Collect and monitor data related to unit performance and metrics
- Submit reports and charts as required
- Attend training sessions workshops and staff meetings to improve knowledge skills and
abilities
- Work in a multidisciplinary team with uniformed correctional staff and providers to achieve
rehabilitative program goals
- Assist with deescalating conflicts and manage non-compliance with program rules
- Respond alongside uniformed correctional staff to manage incidents in designated housing
areas to ensure safety and security
- Perform related duties as assigned.

Preferred Skills;
- Supervisory experience in a group community educational or institutional setting is preferred.
- Background in counseling therapy social work and advanced degree and/or licensure
- Knowledge of the criminal justice system and experience working with justice involved
populations.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of correctional
staff.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment prepare written reports and documents.
- Knowledge of human development and behavior counseling techniques behavior modification
and intervention techniques.
- Ability to mentor and provide positive interaction guidance and leadership to people in
custody.
- Excellent writing communication inter-personal analytical research problem-solving and
organizational skills.

Qualifications :

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and four years of satisfactory full time experience in the field of investigations auditing law enforcement criminal
justice or in a major operational area of the agency in which the appointment is to be
made 18 months of which must have been in an administrative managerial or
executive capacity or supervising a staff performing investigations or related work; or
2. Education and/or experience equivalent to 1 above. However all candidates must
have the 18 months of experience in an administrative managerial executive or
supervisory capacity as described in 1 above.
