Job Description:
Position Purpose summary: The Chaplain provides Christian-based pastoral care services within a youth home setting in keeping with approved pastoral care practices. The incumbent is responsible for face-to-face caregiving teaching the bible building community and conversations about God & prayer.
Accountabilities:
The Bethany Home Chaplain reports to the Lead Chaplain of Crossroads Residential Services.
The incumbent may perform all some or similar duties to the listed below:
- Prays with and/or leads people to faith in Jesus Christ as opportunity permits.
- Provide youth with opportunities to access spiritual care support including pastoral counselling and prayer.
- Plans and conducts creative pastoral care programs and activities (i.e. Creative worship services Alpha course bible study sharing circle etc.).
- Collaborate with team members to create and implement seasonal programs (i.e. summer garden carpentry outings special events Beaver Creek Camp events Saskatoon Temple events etc.).
- Build appropriate and professional relationships with youth contributing to their spiritual development by engaging them in spiritual conversations (on-going visits) or recreational activities in the house.
- Always provide youth with the highest level of care respect and compassion when providing support.
- Ensures that a proper Christian spiritual focus is applied to programs and initiatives.
- Collaborates with leadership and other spiritual and cultural care givers (external partners) for the benefit of Bethany Home and youth.
- Liaises with representatives of other faith communities as needed.
- Acts as a member of the case management team including intakes when required.
- Communicates with youth families staff and community a compassionate empathetic and inspirational manner.
- Maintains written records/logs of activities (including activity reports and statistical information).
- Knows and acts in accordance with security procedures of The Salvation Army and Bethany Home to ensure safety and confidentiality of information.
- Maintains physical décor and set-up of pastoral care areas in collaboration with team members.
- Submit work orders to the Maintenance department as needed
- May serve on Salvation Army Councils and Committees.
- Accompanying youth on shopping trips and outings as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Health & Safety (if applicable):
- Co-operate and participate fully in The Salvation Armys Occupational Health and Safety Program in order to maintain a safe work environment
- Identify and immediately report hazards and incidents with the potential for injury to themselves or others to the Program Coordinator
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Armys health and safety policies and procedures.

MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
- Material: The Chaplain is responsible for all resources; gifts provided for youth and the physical environment of the office and program space.
- Financial: The Chaplain is involved in minor financial matters regularly or on a relief basis or has the responsibility for the wise use of his/her own resources. They may be authorized to spend disburse or collect small amounts of cash. The Chaplain has very little input into the annual budget.
Working Conditions:
The Bethany Home Chaplain will be in a work environment that is consistent with youth group homes. The Chaplain will work under the following conditions:
- Dealing with mental health issues
- Dealing with addiction issues
- Crisis Situations
- A wide variety of spiritual and cultural backgrounds
The Chaplain may have little to no travel required (local travel to and from different facilities)
The performance of the job requires a moderate amount of standing walking and assisting youth.
Exposure to Hazards:
The Chaplain may be exposed to the risk of minor to moderate injury or illness due to:
- Physical attacks by potentially violent youth
- Exposure to infectious diseased
- Exposure to bodily fluids
- Other potentially dangerous situations
Precautionary Measures:
The Chaplain must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):
- Universal precautions including hand wash with anti-bacterial soap.

education experience AND Qualifications:
- Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
- Ability to provide an original copy of a Background Check including Vulnerable sector check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion is required including Child Check (if appropriate).
Education Qualifications and Certifications:
The successful applicant will hold/have one or more of the following:
- Booth University College Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care program or equivalent
- Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)
- Ordination with a church denomination or diocese
- Completion of a formal post-secondary program of two academic years in Biblical and/or Theological studies
In addition the applicant will be required to have the following:
- First Aid
- Non-violent Crisis intervention training or TCItraining
Experience and Knowledge:
The ideal candidate must have:
- 1 years experience with at least one year experience in a spiritual care role in a social services setting or an equivalent combination of education training and experience may be considered
- Solid knowledge of various theologies and faith backgrounds.
- Solid knowledge of spiritual care and/or pastoral counselling and an understanding of its application within the context of vulnerable youth.

Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $20.75 to $25.94 with a maximum of $31.13.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions internal equity and candidate experience skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
