The Position

Class Code 28522: Traffic Signs Maintenance Worker I

Transfer job postings are for County of Sacramento employees only.
In order to be qualified for a transfer:

1. You must meet the Minimum Qualifications of the new job.
2. The difference between the top salary steps (the highest pay rate within the range of pay) of your current job class and the job class that you intend to transfer into must be less than 5%.

There are three different transfer types that you may qualify for: interdepartmental transfer interclass transfer and voluntary demotion. These different transfer types are defined as:

  • Interdepartmental transfer - a transfer in the same class from one County department to another.
  • Interclass transfer - a transfer from one job class to a different job addition the difference between the top salary steps (the highest pay rate within the range of pay) of your current job class and the job class that you intend to transfer into must be less than 5%.
  • Voluntary demotion - a transfer into a job class that pays less than 95% of your current class salary.
If you are requesting an interclass transfer or voluntary demotion either action is a change in class. Whether the change is a transfer or a demotion depends upon the difference between the maximum salary rates of the requested and incumbent classes. Personnel Ordinance Section 2.78.294 or the applicable labor agreement sets the criteria for determining the maximum difference allowed. Personnel Ordinance Section 2.78.228 defines demotion.

Under close supervision the Traffic Signs Maintenance Worker I performs a variety of traffic control field work including the fabrication installation repair and maintenance of traffic signs street markings and other non-electrical traffic control devices in the unincorporated areas of Sacramento County.

Examples of Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of

  • Operation and maintenance of a variety of hand electric and pneumatic power tools and equipment
  • Tools materials and equipment used in the painting trade
  • Techniques used in the maintenance and repair of roadways buildings and machinery
  • Common safety practices and procedures related to traffic signs
  • Office procedures methods and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing spreadsheets databases and other specialized applications related to area of assignment
  • English usage spelling grammar and punctuation
Ability to
  • Learn techniques for assembling installing replacing repairing and painting traffic signs street markings and non-electrical portions of traffic control devices
  • Understand and follow applicable Federal State and local laws codes and regulations
  • Place cones barricades warning devices and direct the flow of traffic at job sites
  • Learn to read and interpret simple dimensions on blueprints construction plans drawings and maps related to traffic signs and markings
  • Learn safety work methods and safety regulations related to traffic signs and markings
  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Work independently or as a member of a crew
  • Comprehend technological changes in the traffic signs field
  • Read write and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance

Employment Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Either: 30 semester (45 quarter) units from an accredited college career school or Federal/State approved apprenticeship program in a construction trade or a closely related field.

Or: One year of full-time paid or volunteer experience performing general labor work such as roadway repair mechanical equipment maintenance professional painting or other construction trade.

NOTE: Completion of training courses which do not have semester unit values are equated to semester units on the basis of: 15 clock hours of instruction equal one (1) semester (1.5 quarter) unit.

Note: If the word experience is referenced in the minimum qualifications it means full-time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements.

General Qualifications

Criminal History and Background Checks:
The County may access criminal history information on candidates who have accepted a conditional offer of appointment for this class consistent with the provisions of Board of Supervisors Resolution No. 82-602 Personnel Policies and applicable federal and state laws. The County shall not consider for employment any candidate who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that relates to or impacts the candidates ability to perform the job duties of this class unless it is determined that mitigating circumstances exist. For purposes of accessing criminal history information the candidate will be fingerprinted. A subsequent arrest notification may be obtained.

The County may also conduct a background check on the candidate prior to appointment to a position within this class. The background check may include personal and professional reference checks credit history checks where authorized by Labor Code section 1024.5 Social Security Number verification professional license/registration verification military service information and driving history. Information obtained in the course of this background check will be considered by the appointing authority in the selection obtaining such information the County will comply with applicable consent and disclosure practices in the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the California Investigative Consumer Reporting Agencies Act.

License Requirement:
A valid California Driver License Class C or higher shall be required at the time of appointment. Failure to obtain or maintain the appropriate California Driver License may constitute cause for personnel action in accordance with Civil Service Rules or applicable bargaining agreement. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Certification Requirements:
A basic CPR/First Aid certification shall be required for all positions in this class. Failure to obtain or maintain the appropriate certification may constitute cause for personnel action in accordance with Civil Service Rules or applicable bargaining agreement. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Minimum Age:
Applicants must be 18 years of age at the time of appointment because of the hazards of the job as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Positions in this class require the incumbent to:
  • Work outside in all types of climatic conditions including inclement or very hot weather.
  • Work on uneven terrain.
  • Work around dust fumes and gases.
  • Work in loud or noisy areas.
  • Work in and around moving traffic.
  • Work various shifts overtime weekends holidays and on-call.
