We are seeking a Wildlife Technician to become part our dynamic team in Fort McMurray Alberta. The successful candidate will provide technical support for wildlife monitoring and assessment projects in northern Alberta. Tasks will vary by autumn and winter work will primarily be composed of wildlife sweeps along with data analysis and reporting in support of those spring and summer work will include wildlife sweeps breeding bird and amphibian surveys wildlife monitoring programs and amphibian salvages along with data entry analysis and assistance in the writing of reports. The successful candidate can expect extensive field work at remote and mine-site locations in northern Alberta. This is not a fly-in/fly out role and requires relocation to Fort McMurray.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in field programs that assess and monitor wildlife populations and habitat conditions. Programs may be general wildlife sweeps or focus on barred owls pileated woodpeckers sharp-tailed grouse or Canadian toads.

  • Data management analysis and reporting in support of wildlife monitoring programs.

  • Assist in maintaining and managing field equipment in the Fort McMurray office including coordination with other Hatfield offices as required regarding specific equipment needs/allocation among offices.

  • Support aquatic assessments (e.g. fish rescue and relocation benthic invertebrate communities water and sediment chemistry).

  • Support fish rescue and relocation projects.

  • Participate in environmental monitoring and assessment programs for construction projects.

  • Work with teams of environmental specialists and technicians responsible for conducting environmental baseline surveys and impact assessment studies in conformance with local provincial and federal regulations.

  • Ensure compliance with Hatfields Health and Safety Management Plan the law and client health and safety protocols as well as compliance with Hatfields Quality Management Plan and external requirements and regulations.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of a diploma or undergraduate degree in biological sciences.

  • One year of related work experience in environmental or aquatic sciences is an asset.

  • A valid Canadian drivers license for the past three years experience driving a pickup truck and the ability to meet the requirements for our third party automobile insurance policy.

Other Assets/Skills

  • Ability to work independently or in teams of technicians with varying levels of experience and maintain a positive attitude.

  • Ability and interest to undertake extensive fieldwork in a range of weather conditions including working in remote locations and on programs that may require camp stays.

  • Ability to work in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and the willingness to work overtime in support of field programs.

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written technical or scientific writing) including an ability to communicate professionally with clients.

  • Research and analytical skills (data collection compilation and analysis).

  • Experience operating in a dynamic consulting environment is an asset.

  • Experience working with a range of environmental disciplines (wetlands vegetation fish and fish habitat) is an asset.
