Description of Work

Are you a college student (or recent college graduate) looking for a summer internship to learn more about Staff Development & Training If so continue reading to learn more about this exciting opportunity with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety (DPS).

This posting is for a part time Staff Development & Training Intern (Summer 2026) with Juvenile Justice a division of DPS. This Internship is expected to start on May 18 2026 and last for 10 weeks ending on July 24 2026. The work schedule is part time up to 30 hours per week Monday-Friday 8am-5pm. The rate of pay is $18.00 per hour. We value our employees and are committed to providing flexibility in work schedules. This position qualifies for teleworking on a part-time basis as part of the State Telework Program.

This internship will participate in the development of an in-service training course to include a lesson plan and supplemental learning materials. Subject matter will focus on an emerging topic within the juvenile justice field. The training will be targeted for entry level and tenured juvenile justice employees as well as local and state community partners.

Specific responsibilities include:
Conducting independent research on various topics
Interpreting General Statues Administrative Code Policies and Procedures and its application in meeting desired outcomes
Facilitating multiple aspects of project management for developing an adult learning course
Trouble-shooting and problem-solving a range of issues related to the development of training curricula for diverse work groups specifically for adult learners.

As a result of this internship you will have:
Increased knowledge of the Juvenile Justice System in North Carolina
Increased knowledge and understanding of the various Sections within the Division of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention
Practical skills development in project management and curriculum development

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

DPS uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified individuals.

The Minimum Education and Experience (E&E) is REQUIRED to qualify for this position. Management Preferences including Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs) are not required but may be used to determine the pool of most qualified applicants. Managers may also choose to interview/select applicants who demonstrate Management Preferences.

  • Must be currently enrolled in college or a recent college graduate. NOTE: Recent graduates are those who have graduated within the last 6 months.
  • Must be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree (or a recent graduate) in Criminal Justice Public Administration Sociology Psychology Education or related Human Services field.
