Justice Support Centre is seeking a solicitor to provide high-quality legal services across Civil Law (including Victim Services motor vehicle accident property damage social security and employment law) and Driving & Traffic matters with the opportunity to develop expertise in new legal areas. Senior lawyers are strongly encouraged to apply and salary will be commensurate with experience.

Justice Support Centre is a Not-for-Profit Community Legal Centre providing accessible high-quality legal services to people facing economic social and structural disadvantage. We specialise in serving people experiencing domestic and family violence financial hardship vulnerable groups and communities with limited access to legal services.
We deliver:

- casework and representation
- community legal education (CLE)
- outreach legal services
- law reform policy and systems advocacy
We work collaboratively with a wide network of community organisations and stakeholders across South West Sydney.
About the Role
This role provides legal advice casework representation and CLE across Victims Services Civil Law and Driving & Traffic matters. The role includes participation in the Driving Offence Legal Service (DOLS) a vital service assisting clients facing traffic-related offences.
Participation in DOLS will make up approximately 50% of the role.

This is a collaborative role working closely with the Principal Solicitor Assistant Principal Solicitor and broader multidisciplinary teams across JSC.
Key Responsibilities
Legal Advice & Assistance
- deliver trauma-informed accurate and accessible telephone legal advice information and referrals
- provide ongoing assistance and targeted casework for clients experiencing disadvantage according to JSCs eligibility criteria including VS applications and reviews Centrelink FOI applications and Criminal sentences hearings
- support clients who may require ongoing assistance due to financial hardship
- monitoring legal procedural and media developments in the focus areas and providing briefings and updates to relevant JSC staff
- staying informed about legislation practice and procedural developments relevant to the role
- promote accessible respectful and inclusive service delivery for all clients
- engage in reflective practices consistent with our commitment to providing a trauma-informed client centred and culturally safe legal practice.
Duty Lawyer Services
- represent clients in the Local Court as part of our Driving and Traffic Duty Lawyer Service (approximately 12 days per fortnight) and provide back-up coverage for DOLS as required
- ensure that clients understand their options by providing clear advice in accessible language.
Community Engagement and Education
- develop and deliver community legal education plain-language resources and information sessions
- build and maintain relationships with local community organisations particularly those supporting CALD and refugee communities
- support outreach activities and contribute to strengthening referral pathways for clients experiencing vulnerability
- represent JSC in relevant networks building strong stakeholder relationships
- support the Principal and Assistant Principal Solicitors in developing and monitoring programs and initiatives within the focus areas.
Accountability and Reporting
- use the Centres case management system (Actionstep) to record all client work outcomes and activities accurately
- contribute to internal and external reports including reporting to funding bodies
- develop and follow annual work plans aligned with service goals
- adhere to all legal ethical and professional responsibilities including continuing legal education requirements.
Teamwork and Collaboration
- work collaboratively with internal teams including the WDVCAS and Domestic Violence Casework teams to provide holistic and wraparound advice and support for victim-survivors
- participate actively in team meetings reflective practice discussions and planning activities
- share knowledge and contribute to a positive professional and supportive workplace
- promote a positive and professional workplace culture aligned with JSC values of teamwork respect transparency & accountability.
General Functions and Responsibilities
- stay informed and contribute to discussions on policy and social issues affecting communities in Liverpool Fairfield and Bankstown
- contribute to the Centres publications and resources
- adhere to professional codes of practice and maintain compliance with continuing legal education requirements
- maintain up-to-date knowledge of law practice and professional obligations
- use standard office equipment and manage your own document and file requirements
- ensure availability for client services such as telephone advice sessions and outreach and manage court attendance schedules accordingly
- respect and follow Centre policies and codes of behaviour.
Essential Criteria
- holds or is eligible to hold a Current NSW practising certificate
- minimum of 1-year post-admission experience (2 years strongly preferred)
- ability to provide accessible and trauma-informed advice in busy environments such as phone advice sessions
- experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse clients and a commitment to culturally safe practice
- ability to manage competing priorities and maintain high-quality work
- capacity to work holistically with clients including sensitivity to trauma and intersectional needs
- competence using legal case management and ICT systems
- excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to communicate complex information in a practical and accessible way to clients in difficult situations as well as engaging with Courts other support services and interpreters
- demonstrated commitment to social justice particularly for women CALD communities DV survivors and people experiencing systemic disadvantage
- ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
- access to a registered insured vehicle for work-related travel.
