Job Summary

Introduction

THIS POSITION IS OPEN TO CURRENT CITY OF MILWAUKEE EMPLOYEESONLY.

Purpose

The Custodial Worker 3 performs custodial and maintenanceduties and serves as a lead worker scheduling and assisting the CustodialWorkers 1 and 2 in the performance of team assignments for the City Hallcomplex and other city buildings.

Essential Functions

Custodial

  • Wash strip and wax floors; operate floor and carpet care equipment such as floor buffers carpet extraction machinery automatic scrub machines and similar equipment.
  • Maintain washrooms by cleaning mirrors washing woodwork tile and marble polishing metal and filling dispensers. Check washrooms to prevent and address vandalism.
  • Wash windows walls ceilings and glass doors.
  • Clean book stack areas and baseboards.
  • Maintain light fixtures including bulb replacement and fixture cleaning.

Indoor/Outdoor Building Maintenance

  • Sweep and hose down entrances surrounding walkways and drive-up areas.
  • Perform snow removal functions including salting plowing and shoveling.
  • Keep the property surrounding the City Hall complex and other city facilities clean and in good order.
  • Perform general grounds and landscaping duties including debris removal from lawns shrubs and gardens.

Lead Worker

  • Train staff on standard procedures; complete checklists and provide support.
  • Coordinate room set-ups for City events and special cleaning projects.
  • Transport furniture and equipment in vehicles such as cars vans and/or small or medium duty trucks between City locations.
  • Receive sort track deliver and return materials equipment and supplies when assigned to the shipping dock.
  • Ensure custodial staff have proper supplies and equipment.
  • Inspect equipment for proper operation and maintenance.
  • Conduct periodic inventory audits of cleaning products and materials.
  • Assist the Building Services Supervisor in assigning daily duties checklists inspection sheets and special projects.
  • Utilize computer software work order systems and Microsoft Word Excel Outlook and/or Teams for tracking communicating with staff and data entry for inventory and cleaning supplies.

Conditions of Employment

The Custodial Worker 3 must bewilling and able to do the following:

  • Work a flexible schedule including emergencies special events and projects evenings weekends and holidays as needed on short notice.
  • Work from ladders at heights of up to 15 feet.
  • Meet the physical demands of the job including frequent standing walking twisting bending climbing stairs and lifting and pushing items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Work outdoors in variable and extreme weather conditions (e.g. heat cold rain wind and snow).
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as necessary including safety shoes hard hat and safety glasses.

The preplacement testing required for this title includesthe following:

  • Physical exam w/lift test
  • Audiogram
  • Vision test
  • Hepatitis B blood test
  • Non-dot drug test

Minimum Requirements

  1. Regular status as a City of Milwaukee employee having successfully completed a probationary period for a civil service position or status as a City of Milwaukee employee in a fixed term position.
  2. Two years of experience performing functions related to the essential functions listed above.
  3. Six months of experience working with computer systems including Microsoft Word Excel and Outlook (may be concurrent with #1 above.)
  4. Valid Wisconsin Drivers License at time of application and throughout employment.
  5. Good driving record at time of application and throughout employment.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may beconsidered.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Janitorial or custodial lead worker experience.

Knowledge Skills Abilities & Other Characteristics

Technical

  • Knowledge of cleaning maintenance and other custodial duties.
  • Ability to perform minor landscaping and groundskeeping duties.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word Excel Outlook and Teams) and other software systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret maintenance work orders and other job-related forms.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions rules and safety guidelines.
  • Ability to safely use supplies and chemicals.
  • Ability to operate custodial equipment including vacuum cleaners scrubbers extractors buffers polishers and floor strippers.
  • Ability to safely operate Hi-Lift mechanical jacks and other wheeled and mechanized equipment such as ladders dollies and table movers.
  • Ability to safely operate job-related vehicles including lawn mowers snow removal equipment automobiles vans and small or medium duty trucks.
  • Ability to maintain a sanitary and orderly work environment.

  • Ability to exercise care and good judgment regarding safety abiding by safety-related policies laws and Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.
  • Ability to perform under pressure to manage multiple priorities and to work within tight time constraints.
  • Situational awareness and the ability to monitor the work site vicinity including pedestrian traffic to ensure the safety of the custodial crew other staff and the public.
  • Creative problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to effectively evaluate situations and exercise sound judgment to resolve problems.
  • Ability to remain calm during adverse situations.

  • Ability to plan direct coordinate and inspect the work of others.

Current Salary

The current starting salary rate (Pay Range 8CN) is $49460 annuallyand the resident incentive starting salary for City of Milwaukee residents is$50944 annually. Appointment will be made in accordance with the provisionsof the salary ordinance.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESSwill be job-related and willconsist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of related educationexperience and accomplishments an evaluation of written communicationinterviews and/or other assessment methods. The Department of Public Worksreserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to proceed in theselection process. Information from the selection process will be used to makea hiring decision. Selected candidates will be transferred and/or promoted tothe position.
