About the Role
As the Cancer Surgery MDC APP you will function as a clinician consultant educator and care navigator working closely with surgeons and oncology specialists across multiple disciplines. You will ensure that each patient experiences clear communication coordinated decision-making and compassionate support throughout their cancer journey.
You will serve as:
- The conduit between surgeon and patient
- The link between surgical and medical oncology teams
- The sole overseer of care coordination for assigned patients
This role blends clinical care behavioral health awareness patient education and system navigation - allowing you to practice at the top of your license while making a profound difference in patient experience and outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary clinical point of contact for patients undergoing GU GI and thoracic cancer surgery guiding them before and after surgery and throughout the Multidisciplinary Clinic (MDC) experience
- Coordinate and oversee care across surgeons oncology specialists diagnostics and follow-up services to ensure seamless timely care
- Perform focused histories and physical exams; assess diagnose and manage patient needs using evidence-based guidelines
- Educate and support patients and families addressing medical psychosocial and behavioral health needs
- Monitor changes in patient status and proactively collaborate with the care team to adjust care plans
- Document care accurately and timely in the EMR while ensuring regulatory quality and coding compliance
- Participate in multidisciplinary collaboration and quality improvement initiatives
Required Qualifications
Education & Licensure
- Nurse Practitioner: Masters degree from an accredited nursing program
- Physician Assistant: Graduation from an accredited PA program
- Active Maryland license (or ability to obtain)
- Current DEA license and Maryland Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) license
- Current BLS certification (American Heart Association or approved provider)
- Unrestricted license with no history of suspension or revocation
- Eligible for participation with all payers
Skills & Experience
- Prior experience in oncology surgical care or complex care coordination preferred
- Strong clinical judgment and commitment to evidence-based practice
- Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR experience preferred)
- Excellent organizational time-management and multitasking abilities
- Strong interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently while thriving in a team-based environment
